Ok, I'm relaxing a bit now, thanks chaps :smiling9:

Just before I start the experiment for real....(just had a test)..can I be certain you want the MBR's & Sects from the USB stick or the HDD in the machine?? Sorry. Gotta check. Once I get confirmation I'll get cracking and post.

Forget to mention something

Before I did the tests I did some trial runs.

My 8gb cruzor was working sweet - by accident I reloaded G4D when I was testing a 2 gb stick, I wanted to load g4d on the 2gb stick but the drive switched at the top in RMP and I reloaded g4d back on to the 8gb by accident.

I thought it wouoldnt matter as it was already g4d (and no formatting etc) - and I couldnt boot the PC back up again, flashing cursor again.

Can you repeat that test again?

Either grub4dos doesn't like going on twice, or maybe when Windows see a grub4dos USB drive (plug in) it 'updates' the MBR for you ???

1. Restore 8GB pen back to working condition - do NOT test it yet orremove it from system.
2. Get USB Info
3. Run grub4dos on it
4. get USB Info
5. Unplug pen
6. Replug pen and get USB Info
7. Use pen to boot a system
8. Get USb Info again

Anything change???

1. Restore 8GB pen back to working condition - do NOT test it yet orremove it from system.

reimaged with RMPREP to known working condition from tested image - stayed in system - not ejected

2. Get USB Info

You are still panicking. :smiling9:

The files:
BS-PCDC800-NOTWORKING
MBR-PCDC800-NOTWORKING
are IDENTICAL and they are BOTH the MBR.

The files:
BS-LT6910P-WORKING
MBR-LT6910P-WORKING
are also IDENTICAL, they are both the MBR AND they are also identical to the other two above.

I'll try to be more explicit.
Use Hdhacker and image once the first sector of the PhysicalDrive (the MBR) and once the first sector of LogicalDrive (first sector of the bootsector).

Sometimes it is so difficult to communicate...

However never mind.

The drive is formatted FAT32 with partition ID 0C, which is correct (LBA mapping) but that probably is ignored by the stoopid BIOS of the dc7800, which most probably defaults to 240 heads instead of the standard 255.

The bootsector is Vista/7 invoking BOOTMGR.

The good news are that you can try patching the bootsector according to this:
http://www.911cd.net...o...1702&st=129
http://www.boot-land...?...=8528&st=21

The bad news are that the exe's won't work as your bootsector is identified by MSDOS5.1 (Vista :( ?) so you'll have to use a hex editor, Tiny Hexer is suggested:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=8734

But since the code is different, we will need to find which bytes to actually patch....

Can you use for testing purpose a "normal" (2K/XP) bootsector invoking NTLDR?

Just to make sure your test was valid...

1. Restore 8GB pen back to working condition - do NOT test it yet orremove it from system.

>>>reimaged with RMPREP to known working condition from tested image - stayed in system - not ejected

Can you repeat 1 and test the stick on problem system (twice in a row after cold off each time).

Then re-insert in RMPrep system and check USb info is same.

In step 7 I meant boot from a problem system! There is no problem with a good system so why test it on a good system - it is the problem system we are trying to get to boot. It seems to me that the problem system only boots from a 240 hd geometry ptn table???

Yes, you are.

You evidently completely failed reading the given links and what I posted.

In a nutshell:
  • some bootsector CODEs do an additional UNNEEDED check on CHS values
  • this check can be removed since it is UNNEEDED
  • there is NOT a documented way (AFAIK) to remove this UNNEEDED check on your particular bootsector CODE

In other words:
  • you have a problem
  • there is a known, tested solution to solve THAT problem in similar situations
  • there is NOT a known tested solution to solve THAT problem in EXACTLY your situation

So, if you want to solve your problem you will have to:
  • experiment with a different bootsector CODE for which the solution exists (to verify that the solution actually works in your case and that your problem is actually the one that is connected to this CHS mapping)
  • find how to apply the same principles on a different CODE (the one you use)

Hey, keep on fight Posted Image :D

Your tinkering about the lame hardware is kinda usable -- steve will be warned against such trouble cases. (If I got it right what is happening with your boot problems -- maybe RMprepUSB isn't blamed here whatsoever) :smiling9:

@Steve - here is the USB info you asked for - stays the same after 2 cold reboots - and the cylinders are on 254, I think so it does boot even if not on 240 - this is "the" trouble machine.

Thanks

Do you have an image with 240 hds (max head 239 in ptn table) and try this on the 'bad' system?

You said the bad system had some BIOS options, what are they? Can you set the bad BIOS to LBA 255/63 ???

What are those compies, Technotika? And what are you trying to boot (GRUB, or what)? :smiling9:

Can you create a syslinux stick with RMPrepUSB and then click on the install grub4dos button - add a menu.lst and see if that boots?

here is info when working with syslinux - below that is when G4D got put on and cursor blinked,
Could this be a freak machine that just doesnt play nice with G4D. But then of course I have that image with g4d that works, weird. :)
@ wonko (if you havent fallen asleep) not ignoring what you wrote just wanna see the tests through to the end with S :(
