Friends keep telling me, how much they love the new Windows 8 / 8.1.
Not the GUI though, but how much faster it boots compared to Win7.

Since Win8 is that much fatter than Win7, i couldn't see how this should be possible and thought, people see what they want to see.

Now i stumbled about some info 'hidden away' in the MSDN, that rehabilitates my friends. ;)

In Windows 8, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into hybrid shutdown (S4) and all devices are put into D3.
.
.
.
Note that in Windows 8, hybrid shutdown (S4) stops user sessions but the contents of kernel sessions are written to hard disk. This enables faster boot.

So not only enters Win8 hibernation, when one clicks on shutdown.
It even takes the time to end the user session, so the layman can not notice, that Win8 went into hibernation instead of shutdown.

Just told this to two friends and they weren't too happy to know, that they paid good money for a feature they already had.

Maybe this helps you or one of your friends to save some money on a pointless investment.

Not sure I agree with this 100%. Yes, if you pay to get an "upgrade", probably not worth it for most folks. On the other hand, if it comes with a new PC, no reason to downgrade. There are a lot of nice things in Win8.x and a simple addition of a "real" start menu replacement, and boot to desktop means that you don't have to use the "touch" stuff (unless you want to).

Spent some time with a 2-in-1 tablet/notebook over the holidays, and it was quite nice to have both options (tablet with or without keyboard) and more traditional key/mouse capabilities.

So as with many things...YMMV...

That depends. If you have a Win7 to install and can get your money back for the Win8. Go for it!
If you can't save money either way, my whole point doesn't apply.
