Apologies if this is a stupid question, I searched the forums and the web for an answer but can't find one.

I want to be able to use ImDisk to create a large drive 40Gb+, (which it does flawlessly) and I then try and share it out over NFS and whichever product I use it fails, Windows, FreeNFS.  I'm not an expert in this area but I'm hoping someone can tell me if this is possible at all.

thanks

You'll probably need to provide some additional info, like EXACT Windows (or other OS) you are using, the actual EXACT software you tried, the EXACT way you attempted to map/expose/access the IMDISK drive.

IMDISK (notwithstanding the name) does not expose a "disk" *like* device, but rather a volume or filesystem only, if the NFS *whatever* wants to "hook" the device through (say) the \\.\PhysicalDrive notation, an IMDISK drive is simply not there.

If you prefer an IMDISK drive is "not seen" by:

Disk Manager

Diskpart

Mountvol

etc. and has not a MBR, it is just a single volume.

If this is the case you may want to use instead the Arsenal Image driver (also by Olof) that exposes a "full" device to the OS.

Hi Wonko,

I've used, so far Windows Server 2008 R2 through to Server 2016.

* Using the native NFS feature which is bundled with the OS.  Fails with the reason you have described above.

* FreeNFS - has has the same issue as above.

* WinNFSd - the application runs but VMware wont see the NFS (http://blog.gethelpb...or-vmware-esxi/) this seems to explain the reason why.

* I was going to look into Arsenal Image Mounter but wanted to use free software where possible.  I will revisit this to see if I can get any further.  (NB I know that non commercial can use this FoC but not sure where a School would sit within this scope.)

More reading require me thinks, thanks for replying.

thanks

(p.s. I'm currently trying with Ubuntu but have not finished this as yet)

Arsenal Image is "free software", it is licensed agpl3.0:

http://www.gnu.org/l...s/agpl-3.0.html

http://reboot.pro/to...iniport-driver/

Whether it is freeware or not depends on the use, you can ask the good people at Arsenal about your specific "School" use.

Thanks, I will ask.  Not sure why you put quotation marks around school though.

Thanks, I will ask.  Not sure why you put quotation marks around school though.

There could be all shades of gray (besides white and black), besides the main distinction between private and public schools, there may be between profit and no-profit ones and even within school activities, some additional lines may be drawn, like using the software in (say) a laboratory or using it in accounting.

Whether the above applies to the Arsenal Recon license cannot really say, though the actual tool (not the source code or API) is AFAIK freeware, so I don't really see the problem, unless you want to recompile it/create a derivative. :dubbio:
