Posted Image I think the Kon-Boot “hack tool” demonstrates perfectly that hacking a Windows machine can easily be performed by a cleaning lady if she has been equipped with the right boot CD. In only a few seconds, she could create a new account with admin privileges. The good woman doesn't even have to stop shoving her vacuum cleaner around while performing this hack, bypassing all your firewalls, antivirus programs, monitoring solutions, and intrusion detection systems.

Why would a cleaning lady be interested in hacking your computers, you might wonder? Well, your company simply doesn't pay her enough to resist the generous offer of the nice guy with the thick glasses who explained to her so patiently how to insert the CD. After all, it can't be that bad to just turn on a computer for a few seconds. Even her vacuum cleaner consumes more power. She probably doesn't know that the nearsighted young man works for one of those fast-growing industrial espionage syndicates that has been hired by one of your company's competitors from far east (or far west).

Just for the record :), my cleaning lady is sixtysh, does not wear high heels, nor a nice maid outfit, and sports the same kind of thick glasses Michael Pietroforte attributes to the hacker.
That's about the only thing (the nice looking cleaning lady :) ) that Michael Pietroforte has right. :)

Five points to remember:
  • NOONE is interested in spying your last vacation photo's.
  • NOONE will ever care about the e-mails you wrote to your cousin
  • NOONE will copy your UNpublished story (there are GOOD reasons why in the last 15 years you never found a willing editor/publisher)
  • there are NO fast growing industrial espionage syndicates that will EVER attempt to break in your PC
  • those that administer actual security or sensible data normally know MUCH better than reading Michael's blog

This kind of advice is about as useful as riding bycicle tips are to a fish. :)

"They" are NOT after you. :)
IF "they" were, you would have NO chance whatsoever.:)

In any case, BEFORE encrypting your hard disk, remember to wear a protective hat:

or "they" will read your password from your mind....:)

Nice one.

You're lucky because our cleaning lady is actually a man. Around here we already encrypt all documents. They are written in Portuguese to ensure that no secrets are leaked and understood by other sovereign countries in the world with the exception of our powerful allies that also understand Portuguese.

Works like a charm. Another trick also used to prevent espionage is to completely ignore or overlook documentation. We've been doing this with WinBuilder and other projects since years ago to ensure that nobody else (including developers) are capable of copying the magic that goes inside the engine or even understanding it as a whole.

With these type of security measures in place, we're safe against cleaning lady attacks.

:)
