I'm having the same issue that Pikachu was having below. Tried following the instructions in that conversation but only was able to get so far with it. Would love some help!

Is the "below" meaning here?

Start posting the same information Pikachu posted at the time....

I've got my HD yanked out right now and am backing up files just in case of serious trouble.
When I plug back in, what info should I get... the geometrics stuff?
As far as I can tell, I only have one partition on the drive unlike Pikachu.

When I run root (hd0,0) I get:
Filesystem type is ntfs, partition type 0x7
When I run Find / I get
Error 17: File not found
Same with the chainloader command
When I run geometry (hd,0,0) I get:
Drive 0x80(LBA)" C/H/S=16383/255/63, Sector Count/Size=1953525186/512
Partition num: 0, Filesytem type is ntfs, partition type 0x7

Yeah, same thing
I type
find / [TAB]
and get
Error 17: File Not Found
Well, this means that the drive currently root, which should be (hd0,0) as you just successfully ran:
root (hd0,0)[ENTER]
is completely empty, so I cannot see what you backed up.
Since you have a single partition, at least the grldr file should be found on it.
Switch your PC off.
Re-switch it on.
Try describing what happens during boot.
Once you have booted, I presume to the grub4dos Command Line, you should be able to see on top of the screen the actual version of grub4dos.
Then, try again:
root ([TAB]
let it Autocomplete until:
root (hd0,0)and press [ENTER]
then try again:
find /[TAB]
and
find (hd0,0)/[TAB]

During boot, it flashes through some stuff really fast that it too quick to read and then goes to
acpi
Vista Loader 2.1.2
Done!
Fallback 1
find --set-root /bootmgr
Error 17: File not found
Booting 'Windows NT/2000/XP'
Fallback 2
Find --set-root /ntldr
Error 17: File not found
Booting 'Enter Command Line'
Boot Failed! Press and key to enter command line.
Now let me try those commands again as you suggested... brb

Possible disks are: fd0 hd0 rd
Root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ntfs,. partition type 0x7
Find / [TAB]
Error 17: File not found
find (hd0,0)/
Error 17: File not found
The version of GRUB was listed at the top of the screen but it's scrolled off... want me to get that for you?

If you press the "any" key :Error 17: File not found
Booting 'Enter Command Line'
Boot Failed! Press any key to enter command line.
http://www.911cd.net...o...157790&st=5
you should be able to get to command line, or try pressing quickly the "c" key as soon as you see the quick flashing "something".

P.S.:
Sorry, we are crossposting.
It's really strange that grub4dos sees the partition "normally" and can't find ANY file on it.
And WHERE is the grub4dos file?
At least a grldr file needs to be somewhere.
Can you re-connect to the "other" PC the hard disk and post a Directory listing of the files on the drive?

I tried the hitting 'c' button whilst booting... no go... just flies through stuff
The version is:
GRUBvDOS 0.4.3 2007-03-13, Memory: 639k / 3198M, CodeEnd: 0x3D7BC

You want me to take it out of the PC and connect it to my mac again? If so, is there a specific directory you want to check out?
Yes.
I guess you have on the MAC both read and write access to NTFS don't you?
There should be "somewhere", possibly in:
- "root"
- /boot/
- /boot/grub/
some files, hopefully:
- grldr
- menu.lst
menu.lst is it's ".ini" file.
ideally, you should:
- rename grldr to grldr.old
- rename menu.lst to menu.lst.old AND post here it's contents
- download grub4dos 0.4.4 2009-06-20:
http://download.gna.org/grub4dos/
http://download.gna....-2009-06-20.zip - from the downloaded file extract files grldr and menu.lst and put them in "root" of the drive
In any case, check the files in the downloaded archive and see if you can find any equally named file anywhere on the disk.
While you are at it, also check you have just one partition on that hard disk.
Unfortunately the (old) version 0.4.3 you have misses some "writing" commands, thus we cannot attempt to "repair" anything from within the booted grub4dos.

If I have to reformat, I'll do it... but I'd like to avoid if at all possible because the set up is a nightmare. But truth be told, I installed Vista on my last PC meltdown and it's really not usable with some of the software I use so mabe it's a sign to get back to XP.
I'll look for those files now and report what I find.

Interesting... I see GRLDR but it's not part of any directory, just sitting by itself. The Boot directory doesn't contain anything about either GRLDR or menu.lst.
It is possible that the "embedded" menu.lst in the grub4dos you have has been edited to look NOT for an external menu.lst.
I would try checking the NTFS flesystem anyway, use TESTDISK:
http://www.cgsecurit...g/wiki/TestDisk
It seems like there is a OS X version now:
http://testdisk.darwinports.com/
but cannot say how dependable it is (whilst I can guarantee for testdisk on DOS/NT/Linux).
Check also the contents of the /boot/ folder.
