Hi!

I stumbled upon this tutorial: http://www.cheers4al...ry-card-to-2gb/

Is this real and how is this possible? Does it work with other models?

Is this real and how is this possible? Does it work with other models?

Most probably it is real, BUT it is not possible. :w00t:

There are actually THREE possible explanations, two of which "real" ones, .and the third "fake".

#1 It is rather common that - for any reason - an electronic component is "marked" (or "setup") differently from what it is actually "capable of". A firm normally produces a number of cards, of various capacity and it can happen that - in some particular cases/occasions it costs more to have a separate line/process/whatever for the low end of the range, and in these cases the higher model is "downmarked" to lower specs.

#2 It is possible that in the specific case of a device that is a "memory" one, for specific sizes, the "cut" of the memory on board does not allow enough "spare sectors", and thus label capacity is reduced in order to allow for enough spares, if you use "all the available" sectors it's capacity may well, in some cases, double.

#3 It is possible that the program, just like the ones often used to produce "fake" USB sticks simply changes the "declared through the interface" capacity, if this is the case the card would format normally in FAT16 or 32 but once you attempt to "fill it to the brim", you will start getting errors as soon as you fill it up to the "real" capacity.

In any case, the controller on the card needs to be necessarily a SKymedi one and not only, as each of the makers of these controllers, including Skimedi, usually produce several different versions/models of these controllers and each of them (or a group of them) *needs* a specific Manufacturer Tool such as the one in the post.

So, in order to have it working, you need to find:

a. a card (It is not mentioned, but I presume a SD card) which has a Skymedi controller inside (and detecting if there is one inside a card is not as easy as you might think)

b. one of hypothesis #1 or #2 need to be the case

It is more probable you find the needle in the haystack.

You might find these of interest, however:
