Hi there,

I released LiLi 2.8.0 last weekend and it adds support for Windows ISO.

This means you can use LiLi to create USB installers for :

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
I don't have many feedbacks on this support so please let me know if you try it.

I hope that you will like this new support and the other new features.

Have a nice day,

Tibo

PS : Windows XP is not supported and will not be.

Can I submit this:

One tool to rule them all !

http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/news/item/one-tool-to-rule-them-all
to the "2011 most inaccurately titled web page of the year Award" ? :1st:

New dictionary entry:
ALL=anything BUT Windows XP

Why this "racism" against XP? :w00t: (I mean I can understand it if it was Vista , but XP?)

A few lines about HOW the support to 7 was added would be nice.:)

(like, by using IMDISK, another ramdisk/filedisk driver, a completely new approach, etc.)

Anyway, good work!

By ALL I meaned 4 main Windows versions and 260 Linux ISO which is not so far from the real ALL :-)

My method is very simple, I decompress the ISO directly on your key then I use bootsect.exe to install boot sectors on it.

I choosed not to support Windows XP for mainly 3 reasons :

  • It would need a completely different method than for the other ones (new code + some third party binaries)
  • I want to gently suggest people to stop using such an old piece of software (XP is a 10 year-old computer dinosaur !!)
  • Even Microsoft stops supporting it (mainstream support) since 14/04/2009 (http://support.micro...N=en-gb&C2=1173)

Sure, that's freedom (choosing not to support *anything* you don't fancy). :)

Not supporting an OS that is used roughly by more than 30% people in the world:
http://en.wikipedia....erating_systems
and saying that the tool that doesn't support it manages ALL is evidently deceiving:
http://www.thefreedi...y.com/deceiving
and inaccurate:
http://www.thefreedi....com/inaccurate

You are of course also perfectly free to use your own version of the dictionary :1st: , BUT :
Spoiler

I don't force people to stop using Windows XP. My software actually runs on it.

I just don't want to add Windows XP ISO in my support list because of the previous reasons.

If they want to create USB installer for XP then they can use whatever software they want to, just not mine.

... as it doesn't actually support ALL Operating Systems as improperly advertised....:1st:

No problem whatsoever , as said you are perfectly free to not support XP and also perfectly free to say that your tool supports ALL, as well as I am perfectly free to point out how this latter statement is not accurate.

Check the "But ... then, why?" link in my signature .

You over-analyze a bit.

"One tool to rule them all" is a perfect title to emphasize on the fact that LiLi is now supporting two very different worlds : Windows and Linux. That's it.

If you've been deceived, I'm sorry.

I think some people are being overly critical, but this tool is impressive in many ways and far superior to the others out there in sheer number of supported OSs. The XP PE is a pain in the rear to make a bootable USB stick from so I understand that lack of support for it, for now. As for the advertising pitch, nothing wrong with it at all. Best Buy advertises low prices and great selection, but we all know that isn't true.

Hello Thibaut

LiLi 2.8.0 is very good and works great for me. Thank you.

I have one question:

Is it possible to start LiLi 2.8.0 without installing it?

It would be great to have version 2.8.0 as portable.

Yep, Download page -> More downloads in the middle of the page -> Portable Version

You can also download Portable-VirtualBox and unzip it in "tools\" so LiLi will be able to use it for next installs.

@naviathan > Thank you, I was feeling alone on that one.
