I added the config folder, created the iso_filename.txt file and downloaded the isosel.bin file to the config folder.

While copying ISO files to the drive it suddently unmounted. Tested it several times and it did the same thing.

I installed the ISOStick Updater program and updated to the latest revision (1570) and then found out there was some issues with it (and it didn't fix my original problem), so I went back to 1562.

Same problem, no matter how many times I try to copy ISO files to the drive it just spontaneously disconnects as if I unplugged it.

Now the ISOStick Updater program won't even recognize that I have the thing plugged in but the computer does (I can see the DVD drive and the flash drive). I can still interract briefly with the flash drive until it disconnects again.

What to do now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Ok, so I managed to figure out how to get the updater to recognize the drive again. That little hole is hard to get to when the thing is plugged into a laptop, by the way. :P

I'm still having random disconnects, though, so I guess I'm in wating mode for the next update?

Hmmm. I see you've already tried rolling back to a previous version. Have you tried it in a different machine? Or maybe through a powered USB hub? Random disconnects sound like a power issue to me...

I've tried it directly from a port on the laptop and through a unpowered hub with nothing else connected to it, same issue. I even tried it on a USB3 port and it was still a no go.

My laptop is a very beefy laptop and I've never had power issues before, even testing WiFi USB adapters that are notorious for high power usage.

I'm able to copy small files to the ISOStick, just not large ones. It seems to get about 50 or so MB into the transfer and then hangs.

*UPDATE* As I was typing this, I MIGHT have found a fix. My empty, "iso_filename.txt" was instead named "iso_filename.txt.txt" after renaming this to just "iso_filename.txt" the copy succeeded. This seems like a really odd coincidence, but maybe the rename was related? No idea. I am leaving my initial reply below for posterity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am having the same issue with my work desktop, I have not tried it with my laptop or home desktop yet.

System information:
Operating System: Windows 7 x64, updated with most recent updates
Computer: Dell Optiplex 980 w/ an Intel i7 870 & 12 GB RAM
Anything else needed here?

Here has been my experience so far:
I plugged in the isostick in Read/Write mode and followed the setup steps (created folder, added the isosel.bin, and created iso_filename.txt (empty))

I then downloaded and installed the Win x64 firmware updater and updated to r1570. So far no issues.

I downloaded the latest Kubuntu 12.04 Desktop x64 iso using this torrent ( http://cdimage.ubunt...d64.iso.torrent ) and tried to copy it to the mounted iso stick. After about 10-20 seconds (about 5-8%) the copy failed saying the drive had been unmounted, a few moments later the mounted isostick (H: drive in my case) dissapeared.

I have tried the following workarounds in my ignorance:
  • Change filename to "kubuntu_12_04_Desktop_x64.iso" - No change
  • Found this forum post: http://reboot.pro/17370/ and reverted firmware to r1562 - No Change
  • *UPDATE* As I was typing this reply and gathering information I noticed the iso_filename text file was named "iso_filename.txt.txt" I renamed this to "iso_filename.txt" and re-tried the copy, and it just appears to have worked. I will further reply to this thread if booting up my laptop from the isostick works (Laptop is a Thinkpad T400)
*Post-Update Future Steps*
  • Re-update firmware to r1570
  • Attempt to boot laptop from isostick
  • Attempt to copy another iso to isostick post-boot on laptop.
  • Update this forum thread with progress.

Interesting. But yeah, the firmware considers that file very important. I didn't know it could cause that problem, but it makes sense that having it named properly would affect this.

Hopefully soon he'll finish the ISO Management tool, and it will be able to ensure the file exists in the right place. :)

  • Re-update firmware to r1570
  • Attempt to boot laptop from isostick
  • Attempt to copy another iso to isostick post-boot on laptop.
  • Update this forum thread with progress.

Final update, I performed all of the above steps without issue.

Further, I went back and renamed iso_filename.txt back to the incorrect iso_filename.txt.txt, dismounted the drive, remounted the drive, and I was able to reproduce the file copying issue. So that was clearly my problem.

I would suggest other users experiencing a similar issue validate that the setup files exist exactly as described in the setup steps.

Also, could we possibly change the title of this thread to something along the lines of "Isostick unmounting during large file transfers"?

Thanks for the updates confirming that this was indeed the issue. Hopefully it helps someone else. Now if I can hear back about my support ticket. (My stick dropped into firmware update mode between home and work this morning. Won't revert to normal operation. :( )

I double checked and my iso_filename.txt file is named correctly.

They won't let me retitle the thread, sorry.

Have you confirmed that you don't have known file extensions hidden? That's a default setting in Windows.

Yeah, I hate having Windows hide file extensions so that's one of the first things I change after install.

@ryodoan, Thanks for confirming the iso_filename.txt.txt bug, I've opened a case for that in my bug tracker.
@jgagnon, Does your iso_filename.txt contain anything? It just occurred to me that someone reported a bug with UTF-8 contents in iso_filename.txt. Please double-check that it's either empty, or contains an ISO filename. Use Notepad and be sure ANSI encoding is selected instead of Unicode or UTF-8. If that doesn't do it, it may be a timing bug and I'll get it resolved as soon as I am able.

I've been using Notepad++ and saving as a standard text file. Just be sure, I opened the file in Notepad, modified it, then saved it. Same issue.

Just a heads-up, the new firmware r1612 may fix this problem. Please let me know how it goes.

I did finally figure out I had iso_filename.txt in the wrong location, but even when I put it in the config folder (instead of the root folder) I still had the same stability problems with large files. I do not yet see the 1612 update but when I do I will update my ISOStick and try again. Thank you.

Just a note, since it's a beta update you may need to check the "Show beta firmware" box in the updater for it to show up.

I realized 1612 was still beta and so I updated. I copied a 3.5 GB file to it and had no issues, which it most certainly would not have done before. It transferred slow, though, topping out at about 9.3 MB/s.

Excellent! 9.3MB/s is about what I would expect, it can reach 12MB/s at times but that's a limit of isostick unfortunately.

I can confirm that the new 1612 firmware also fixes my stick crashes when TF card doesn't have a /config dir.

I'm also Win7 x64, but I doubt the OS matters.
