I'm trying to network install Win XP on a laptop with broken dvd drive, using tftpd and instructions given in http://reboot.pro/12340/. I manage to boot Netbbotdisk, command: net view //my-pc exactly lists shared folders on //my-pc, command: net use W: //my-pc/xpnetwork
reports success, command W: changes the prompt to W: . BUT, once inside W: there appears to be nothing at all, command: dir shows empty directory (although it correctly shows the volume label of the partition where share xpnetwork is).
Any idea what may be the issue ?
Thanks, GianCarlo

If I were you (and NO this is not an answer to the issue you are having, which JFYI my crystall ball - notoriously out of tune  - attributes to the network mounted drive being NTFS formatted) I would rather use the approach discussed here:
http://reboot.pro/1936/
making use of Serva, which right now represents the easiest option.

Thanks a lot, that was it indeed! No NTFS native support in Netbootdisk. I just did not think of that; silly of me :mega_shok:
Now I'm going to study the option you suggest,
thanks again! GianCarlo

With FAT, there's one layer of permissions: Share permissions
With NTFS, there're two layers of permissions: Share permissions -> NTFS permissions

I don't think the problem is that "Netbootdisk" doesn't have NTFS support; it doesn't need it, since it's accessing a network filesystem (the share) and not a local disk filesystem. I think the problem is that the NTFS permissions are more restrictive than your share permissions.

Well, thanks a lot, bot Wonko and Developer, for taking the time to answer me, I really appreciate. In the end, you were both right (i believe) and I have now solved my issue, reasoning from your posts; though I'm not sure why, but it worked like this: I had first shared the folder (where Win XP installation folder is) and only afterwards I had enabled Null Session Shares in registry. I "reasoned" that, perhaps, it should have been the other way round, for the Null Share option to take effect... So I just switched off the share and then on again, and it just worked: the share was visible from the laptop booted to netbootdisk. I have just installed XP on my wife's laptop, from which I'm right now writing, to thank you both,
Sincerley, GianCarlo
