I've tried the methods outlined over at http://www.rmprepusb.com for both Win7toGo and Win8toGo. I've tried both my usb 3.0 flash drive and my external HDD (also USB 3).

I can get a copy of windows to boot from the USB 3 HDD on my mac mini 2011 (which has usb 2.0 ports), but I really would like to figure out a way to get the drive booting off the Air. The error I was getting from Win8 is inaccessible boot device and what i got last from a windows 7 try was 0x7e followed by four other sets of codes in brackets.

My most recent attempt was to clone the windows 8 system that is currently installed on the internal SSD (while offline) to the external HDD and edit usb registry entries (following this: http://www.edv-abmay..._clone_en.htm).

Are you sure that the error in Windows 7 is 0x0000007e:

http://support.micro...kb/330182/en-us

and not 0x0000007b:

http://support.micro...kb/324103/en-us

(which would be the "same" Inaccessible boot device)

The 0x0000007b more or less means that the boot device is inaccessible because a suitable driver for it was not found (or not loaded or the interface was not correctly identified).

The error is definitely 0x7e in Windows 7. All I'm getting is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE in Win8. I tried a safe boot in Win7 and the last thing that was loading before the BSOD and reboot was disk.sys.

EDIT: This would be at the OOBE, I believe. But I've also cloned from Win8 to the usb disk with the same results. I haven't tried installing Win7 to the internal disk, cloning, and then editing and updating for booting from USB, though.
