I am looking for advice. I volunteer at a local charity and we're looking to help our clients who are generally at a very low level of computer literacy. We do have a few clients who have computers and the internet but they have difficulty keeping their computer clean from virus. I would like to supply them with a CD or USB with an operating system independent of their home computer. We have access to both Windows XP and Windows 7 installation disks through the Microsoft Donation program.

We want them to be able to access our website so Explorer or Firefox is required. One problem I see is that we have one application, called the voice app, that we want them to have that may be difficult to install. The voice application is a self installing .exe that apparently uses Windows Installer (I see the Windows Installer window flash briefly as it installs). The voice app installer gives no choice as to where it is installed (only on D drive).

I also have to have a working usb headset for the client.

I have no experience with LiveXP but I'm willing to try anything that has a chance to work.

If I am understanding you correctly, You want to be able to boot to a PE environment,
with network/internet, voice app, and usb headset fully functional, so that they
may connect to your website. "For what purpose ?"

If you can post a link to the voice app, xp and Win7 versions, we could take a look at what is needed to
install it into a PE1/3, The usb headset will be a driver install issue, and I have seen reports of
USB headset driver install being succesfull, with some kind words you might persuade a script developer
to accomodate your requests.

Imo, LiveXp is not for your purpose.

First problem, LiveXP does not stay virus free. It's just that the virus is gone again after a reboot. Unless the computer has a HDD.

Second, you can't install a program into a running LiveXP and expect it to still be there after a reboot.
So you eighter have to create a script for your 'the voice app' or your users will have to install it, every time they start their computer.

As far as i know, one can't have a vrus scanner running in the background, like on a 'real' windows.

LiveXP has no firewall, if i remember right. That's a big security risk or not, depending on the home-network setup.


The better way to help your clients would be, to install a free but good virusscanner, which updates itself in regular intervalls and giving them a solid set of rules, for how to behave while on the internet.
Traps on the internet, that target people with little intenet experience, almost always work the same. They are build in a way, that the right real world behavior, will lead to the wrong solution in that case.
