...hi guys yes I'm still using XP sp3,... having issues with usb465.8GB drive.

Self inflicted when I stopped a ntfs "permissions tool" DBC Studio which would'nt recurse a series of dir's.

  "Access Denied" to the drive even from bootable media although I can search the drive for file locations etc (NTFS-Search.1.1.0.6.exe)

   Also can navigate and retrieve anything with "DiskGenius" (only). I do not wish to copy hundreds of 1000's of files or reformat if poss ...been like this long before the covid.

...any help to reverse this read only hell would make me a happy bunny (pretty please)

If it is a NTFS permission issue, icacls should be able to reset them:

...Update: ...accessenum showed "drive not accessible" and Access is denied.

 

  My icacls senario left me hunting for takeown.exe... when trying to invoke a takeown command.

 

  Frequently I used PE win7/win8 usb bootup media tools, takeown perhaps was left out(?)... maybe copying from win7/8 PE to xp usb didn't do any favours to my folder permissions long term(?)

 

 Cutting to the chase, while net searching for takeown I came across a freebieTakeOwnershipPro.

...took a while (their progress bar needs working on)..log file was 53MB..and it said "Failed" when it did its job.

 

I now have drive access, folder and files seem OK (touch wood).

 

Wonko I was hoping you'd answer.... Thanks for your passion and (my) drive!

It is strange, takeown.exe is a "basic" command line tool, it is included - I believe - since Server 2003, and surely it is in Windows 7. (or possibly Vista, it was in the Resource Kit in earlier systems).

 

Win2000 Resource kit version works in XP just fine:

Whether a newer version would be  compatible, is another thing.

 

Most probably the builder for the particular PE you have didn't include it in the build, but I think it can be copied from a corresponding full install
