If you have two machines that both are running Windows Vista or later, follow these steps:

1. Connect the two computers so that they are seen on the network

2. Open a command prompt

3. Type:

mklink /d /j C:\Users\(Name) C:\

*Replace (Name) with whatever you want and substitute the second C with the drive you want to see

4. Use the other machine

5. Open Windows Explorer

6. Click Network (on the left)

7. Open the computer with the (Name) folder

8. Open the "Users" folder

9. Open the (Name) folder (you now have access to another machine's folders and files)

Typically, you can only see the "Users" folder of the other computer linked to your network. Please spread the news about this tip.

How is this different or better than simply sharing the other computers drives in network sharing? OR, simply browsing to the other computer using the UNC and the hidden C$ share? E.g.: \\ComputerName\C$ - this would require you to have administrator privilege on the OTHER PC, without which may be the benefit of your tip, although I would think that you would still not be able to access anything that your privilege level would grant.

1. My method allows you to share USB/DVD/CD drives (which means you do not need to insert a USB and a majority of netbooks do not have an optical drive).

2. Users can even access more than one Windows partition and the person does not need to know how to mount the hidden C$ share (I already attempted the "net use" command).

3. In addition, a friend with a computer connected to the network does not need to borrow an object (unless if his and/or her machine cannot boot).

Also, please replace "tot" with "the" and remove "he" in your reply.

My aren't we a little grammar nazi :)

You are creating a symbolic link, while this works it is not really any better than simply attaching to a regular network share, either a hidden one or a user created one.  It takes the same effort to create a link as it does to create a share, so it's really not any better or worse, some might see it as more convenient but that's debatable.

One caveat to warn about that sometimes in attempting to DELETE a symbolic link you will actually delete the actual folder or drive contents it is pointing to.  You can wipe out a good portion of a drive or folder's contents before you know what's going on.  You CAN use the built in command rmdir (or rd for short) safely from the command line.

I only mention this deletion issue because I had a user at my work do a whole bunch of sym links to stuff she wanted "easier" access to from her second PC.  She stuck them on her desktop so she could use them on THAT PC too (instead of the more logical shortcut link) . She then shared her DESKTOP folder and reached the other stuff through the links via the network from the other PC.  Well, her profile got hosed (not due to this, it was her mucking around in other stuff) and she as directed by IT (ME :)  ) she deleted it while logged in to the administrator account and all the stuff that she had links too went bye bye as well.  She neglected to inform us of the linking she had done.

Incidentally for a GUIfied sym link creator look up HardLinkShellExt in Google, makes it possible to just drag and drop to create sym links.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In case you're confused:
The proper syntax for creating a share at the command line to share an entire drive is:
net share f$=f:\
Where $ behind it makes it a hidden share, not visible to network browsers but still just as available.  Make it a visible share name by dropping the $. You can specify a drive or folder as the target.  Or simply RIGHT click on the drive or folder and choose PROPERTIES and sharing and specify it there.
Create a network map from any share thus:
net use F:      \\COMPUTERNAME\f$
The COMPUTERNAME is the host name of the PC and the share name is whatever you named it above, again the $ implies it's a hidden share.
First, I know how to use "net use". Second, my way only requires one command to be entered without the knowledge of the hidden C$ share (F$ in your situation):
Mine:
mklink /d /j C:\Users\(Name) C:\
Yours:
net share f$=f:\
net use F: \\COMPUTERNAME\f$
If you delete your (Name) folder, it actually only removes the link. Please attempt it as I have done so in the past.
Well good for you!  I'm proud that you found a way to save all that time by doing a common task in an uncommon way.
More time for you to correct other peoples spelling.
Congrats!  :)
You may be right about the deletion, I thing that *I* deleted her profile over the network and hence the files and folders pointed to via the hard link.  Had I deleted the files LOCALLY on her PC then you may be right, the links are simply deleted leaving the targets.
Just for the record, it would be really hard to spread further the news (though I am failing to see the OP as "news" and not even as a "tip"):
On many other forums the similar post has been deleted/unindexed.
I guess that we can draw a few tentative conclusions:
Good find Wonko.
Hi Richard, this is indeed unusual. Traditionally this would fall under the category of spam attempt but you're participating and look like a genuine person. Would you care to explain us what is happening here?
Thanks.
Hmm...
One primary question:
How did "Wonko the Sane" access the "index" of my previous topics?
Besides this, the "net use" feature can perplex inexperienced, command prompt beginners with the "\\", the username of one of the profiles of another computer, "-", machine name, "\", hidden C$, etc.
Do you think that Wonko (the Sane) got the title of The Finder (please take note of the CAPITAL T and F) just because he is a nice guy? :dubbio:
Substitute "hes" with "He's", "advenced" with "advanced", "notic" with "notice", "to" with "too", "devlopers" with "developers", insert "the" between "all" and "time", and finally add a period after "time".
Hey "Wonko the Sane", that is not how you do it...
Are you an implicit moderator lurking beneath "The Finder", which is your title?
Well, actually there is some need for spelling and grammar checking and correcting, though at first sight richard14110 seems a bit too "strict" about it.
richard14110, you may want to relax a bit :), as long as the contents of a post are understandable, there is no actual problem, you must understand how this is an international Community, most members are not mother-tongue English, which represents only a "common language", we are not the British Literary Society (and IF we were, we wouldn't accept suggestions on spelling and puctuation from a yankee :whistling:).
See the known message from HM the Queen:
No, not me, for THREE reasons:
care to know about the other two? :whistling:
If I had actually edited it, you would also have been told how besides the "bad word" you were unneededly aggressive.
