I am fairly new to Linux but a long time windows user... I may be doing something fundamentally wrong.
I want to install ubuntu easy peasy on a netbook.
I downloaded the iso file from my windows desktop then ran unetbootin to create a boot image on a usb flash drive. Then I put the flash drive into my netbook and rebooted. I expected it to reboot off the flash drive and start an install process. But it just did the normal boot from the hard drive. Is that what is supposed to happen? Is what I'm trying to do (create flash drive on windows, boot on linux) a supported operation?
The flash drive has a bunch of files extracted from the iso file. It also retained an old file so not sure if it was supposed to have gotten reformatted. Also, when I did the reboot on windows after running unetbootin (which I'm not sure if it was necessary since I was not planning to run it on my windows machine) it didn't try to boot from it there as well.
As a side note, I was unable to create a user account on bootland site. Kept getting invalid userid message, though I tried several. When it rains it pours. My real email is baconrad@ultramondo.com.
Created image on windows, does not boot on linux

Just a suggestion.... The ubuntu netbook-remix comes in a .img format that can be directly written to USB flash. I use "dd" in Linux, in Windows there are tools.
I've got 9.04 Beta running on my Mini 9 this way easily. If you don't like the "remix" interface, you can switch to "classic" UI in the preferences menu.

Are there any error messages? Is the USB device in the BIOS boot order before the local HDD?

OP had a problem in April 2009.
In january 2010 another user said to have the same problem (but actually had probably another one, and as well omitted ANY meaningful detail)
Today a SPAMMER hit the board, bumping up a number of threads:

hopefully sooner or later an Admin or Mod will notice that and delete the bumping post and ban the moron, his IP (and all his friends and relatives ) .
I presume that BOTH the two initial posters have either suceeded or given up in the meantime.
