Some user avatars are missing in forum posts. I checked in IE and Opera my own close to heart avatar showing my latest haircut - its missing too. Why do I deserve this?

The forum was upgraded and the developers thought it was redundant to have an avatar and profile picture, therefore cut that option. Really lousy change if you ask my opinion, I'd just prefer that they kept things as they were.

there is only photos of profile - and thumb pictures of photo in different places on the forum.
more precisely - what you see now in posts is not avatar, it is thumbnail of profile photo.
This method is taken from Facebook...
this is facebook like forum - FaceForum as I like to call it

This is web 2.0! There is an A.I.engine that automagically decides whether the photo you uploaded is nice or ugly and rejects it if the latter case .Some user avatars are missing in forum posts. You might want to report this issue to your barber.

OK, now I got it - that's why Wonko keeps his photo away of humans. But... it might be possible to upload my avatar as a photo - in this case it will automagically be converter to a thumbnail and finally presented to the struggling public. I guess it should be in jpeg or tiff format to be accepted - with what picture size?

The first you said (jpeg is OK).I guess it should be in jpeg or tiff format to be accepted - with what picture size?
About size use some "common sense", the image will be resized anyway:

I like the avatar functionality, i'm used to plain text when scripting or coding a console or some other type of non GUI application, but it's a nice change to the forum when you get to see some eye candy on the side with avatars.
