I have no doubt that a more and more "portability" for PE should be desirable and highly appreciated.

IMO "Portabilty" in a PE means that the PE can be started and runs well on every (?) host.
That is ok, and already implemented in several projects with 'Importing drivers from host or driverpack' and similar.


My intention was to tell that I do not like any trial to make the PE to an OS replacement.

But, what about the following statement [from Amalux' tutorial] :

These PE's are a great way to launch portable apps, allowing for even greater flexibility and performance

and, again, why these applications were added to PE ?

I'm not sure I understand your point; the goals are not mutually exclusive or contradictory. The ability to 'include' portable applications in PE does not take away from the core PE's stability. I stand by my original statement:

The problem with treating PE as a full OS where any changes made are automatically saved is that many changes shouldn't be saved in PE. Better to keep saved changes specific and controlled (and reversible) e.g. the core PE must remain stable and incorruptible.

but I don't see how your point contradicts that in any way. Maybe there is a misunderstanding about how these portables are 'added' to the PE. They can be added or removed without affecting the core integrity of the PE.

so, are you maybe saying that the persistence (meaning also saving data/info in the same bootable media, as made in Linux) can never be obtained, just in principle, within a PE ?

Clearly, another point is if this feature can be or not useful or suitable.....but who knows ?

Yes, I'm saying it's not a good idea to save all changes in a PE (modified system files, installed programs, updates etc.) the way you do in a full OS. The core PE (portable OS) needs to be unchanged at next boot for stability and dependability. However, adding portable apps (even with file associations, context menus, registry changes etc.) does not counter this principal because if the portables are removed (easy to do) everything is back, exactly as it was before adding the portables.

Whether the Linux type persistence is possible is a separate question, it probably is and if I had the knowledge I'd be happy to share it. I don't know how and I'm just not that motivated to research it right now for reasons mentioned. I'm not saying I wouldn't allow it, of course not; it would be cool to have the option, options are always good.

Anyway, and I wouldn't like to appear picky, if you look in details at your responses above, you can recognize you are supporting my idea/points.

In fact, with your first sentence you responded to my second question/point and, oppositely, your second one is supporting my first question/point.

What I can infer from your responses above is that we finally got a common position.
