all LocalLow subfolders (there are 3 of them in a system) can safely be gotten rid of, or zero-byted, as alacrán prefers. Well, I'll be, we r better off zero-byting or junctioning it to ram, as cryptnetcache gets recreated over time.

Moreover, the deletion of all inet* folders from anywhere in the vhd has caused no issues SO FAR, probably because I do not use internet explorer for a browser.

Great discovery, at least I think so:

the \Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispsi.inf_amd64_db8d3f1ff9f89487 folder is plethoric (1.12gb), so I tried deleting all files inside it while the vhd was online, and the following files would keep staying in:

nvlddmkm.sys

nvldumdx.dll

nvwgf2umx_cfg.dll

I tried rebooting and the system did ok,  but if u wanna play, I have just found out that it is another kettle of fish, or another fish of the same kettle, as u like it ---> u need the following file as well for gaming:

nvwgf2umx.dll

that is it! U'r dun! only 200 something megs. now go tell me that the spacegain is slight.

I believe the same should apply to AMD but I nave no way to verify it. would anybody?

for those who have an I9 cpu, they could disable the following services as well:

"Intel® Capability Licensing Service TCP IP Interface"
    "jhi_service"
    "iaStorAfsService"
    "HfcDisableService"
    "RstMwService"
    "Intel® TPM Provisioning Service"

these entries have been taken away as such from my disable_services.ps1

they might as well be deleted by placing "sc delete" in front of each in a batch file.

btw, in the meantime, I have also tried deleting registry entries concerning what is no longer there in the vhd, and here is what I have found so far:

from an online registry, all

edge,

internet explorer, internetexplorer,

office,

defrag, dfrgui,

restore,

hyperv,

mail,

sidebar,

cloudstore, cloud store,

dvr,

pointofservice,

history,

pricache,

wbem,

softwaredistribution and

locallow

entries

can safely be deleted;

if

hyper-v,

history and

backup

entries

are deleted,

the system will not complete bootup.

that is about it. all this has yielded a 12% (well, even 15% in the end) shrinking of the registry.

I have come across a portable browser called brave, which, believe it or not, I now prefer to long-standing maxthon. I remember setting great store by maxthon as a browser for letting me keep vital passwords, but I have now found out that I can enjoy the same facilities with brave (where I still use maxthon startpage and all the bookmarks and everything). the advantage of brave is its slenderness compared to bulky maxthon, plus the closing of everything on c:\uses\,,, when u shut the browser down, thus having no impact whatsoever on vhd size and logic.

Alacran, I do not rely on brave for that, but on maxthon passkeeper and already imported bookmarks. U missed out on my using the same maxthon homepage. So portability guaranteed. If I were u I would give it a try

In fact you are free to have your own personal preferences, but I'm not agree you recommend something so complicated, to start you need some extra files not included in standard lists of Win_Reduce to be able to run Maxton, just to only capture your passwords, and close it, to then be capable to run Brave Browser and then use the passwords from Maxton homepage, this sounds really absurd and unnecesarily complicate.

As I uderstand it, the meaning of program portability is:

A Portable program has to be able to be used with all its features in any PC, and not requiring any other additional external programs (not included in the OS) to fully make the required tasks.

JFYI

In first place FireFox Portable doesn't need any additional file not included in standard lists of Win_Reduce to be able to run.

You can manually type, or import your passwords to be kept on FireFox Portable, directly without any other intermediary helper.

no need for additional files with brave either, the misunderstanding was due to my previous thinking that i needed maxthon for passwords and accepted its needing additional files. once I saw that I could call the maxthon password facility and even the maxthon homepage (which is quick and handy, with everything within clicking distance), from any other browser, no more additional files. pls tell me the size of firefox on disk - that will be the real difference to me.

It depends of your preferences and use, but in any case you can delete entire \FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox folder, and just keep \FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox64 folder or vice versa as required.

and how much space does the 64 amount to?

at the moment I am working on the plethoric remove_sys32_dll files from the bulkiest dll to the tiniest, hunting for the one that enables upload and download pop up window, otherwise no browser, no maxthon, no brave, no firefox, no nothing opens a damn dialog box to let u tell the os where to download a file to or where to upload a file from. that is how the whole maxthon-> brave story started here.

Try it and you will see, and if it doesn't like you, just delete it, it is a portable program locate outside of your VHD.

I have added to it some additional plugins and also configured it to my preferences, and I don't have anymore the info of the initial used space to give you that info, as previously said the used space depends of your own personal preferences.

ok, I will see after I have finished this quest for the culprit file. I use brave out of the vhd, as I would try firefox, but I have never needed any plugins. so it will be all the smaller.

for the time being, I have learned that the culprit file is smaller than 2megs.

Is it so dificult to understand?: The additional plugins are not necessary in any way for usual use.

I have them because I like to use them.

EDIT: Info from download page (where you can find all languages available):

 Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition
web browser

Download from PortableApps.com

Version 96.0.3 for Windows, English
110MB download / 399MB installed

The used space (uncompressed) should be about the half size if you delete the folder related to non required x86 or x64 version, as said.

ok

in the meantime, culprit file smaller than 1.5megs

btw, if a sys32 dll is not needed, is its dll.mui in sys32\en-us\ not needed too or there is no telling?

i am afraid u concocted the two points. one thing was the quest for a smaller browser, and another was the quest for the culprit file whose absence does not enable u to choose where to upload from and/or to download to. the connection between the two issue was just stochastic, as many things in life.

anyway, the culprit must be shellstyle.dll, which should not be moved off of system32.

As always you are making a mess, shellstyle.dll file was excluded to REMOVE (two weeks ago), since Win_Reduce_Trusted-60 was released, as I detected and reported it is required for save image files in MS Paint.

From this post:

- Changed - file remove_DLL_System32.txt  to  Keep ; \Windows\System32\shellstyle.dll  ; required for Paint - Thanks to alacran

not only for that, I am afraid and, as I do not use paint, i did not consider it at the time. now I have to, and u have learned another thing that fails for its absence. so, last week for 1 reason, now for 2, and 2 is more than 1.

now I am trying to see if 1,300 dll files can be taken out.

well, not worth the effort. no harm in trying but so it is.

a useful thing I have just found out is how to update nvidia drivers when u only have the barebone essentials to make them work. installiing the new over the old seems to be impossible, so the workaround is make a wim file of the old vhd, overwrite the root content of the \windows\inf subfolder in the wim and then apply it to a new vhd, either with winntsetup, or with dism tool if the former fails. give the former another try when it says it has failed, sometimes it works, if not, try dism tool which will do the trick even if it claims it could not at 97% of the process. don't worry, the applying has completed anyway. so, rerun the vhd and now install your new nvidia driver from device manager. at this stage it does work. pls don't ask me why, I only know it does work.

Well, folks, after a couple of weeks trying (in vain) to safely delete over 1,000 files from system32 and syswow64, I have decided to proceed the other way round, by proceeding as follows:

1) copy ur vhd and make sure it is a working one, as u will need to alternatively boot off it many a time.

2) keep everything vital for u open and try to move all syswow64 dll's elsewhere; the reboot must be successful and everything that was open must work ok. if it is the case get rid of the dll's u have moved (u must be left with some 800 dlls in syswow64).

3) now get a bootlog and guarantee the presence of the following files

BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\hal.dll
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\kd.dll
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\mcupdate_GenuineIntel.dll
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\PSHED.dll
BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\BOOTVID.dll

BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\CI.dll

in order to boot successfully; place these files in a separate directory to be sure (the above files are necessary but obviously not sufficient for the system to boot ok).

Unlike the dlls in syswow64, which get blocked (undeletable) when ur favorite sofware is open, those in system32 don't tell u until ... u can't reboot, never mind get the software to work, so this is where ur vhd copy might have to come into play. So,

4) list the system32 root by type and concentrate on the dlls; select them, cut all deleteble ones and paste them to another directory, leaving alone those dlls that do not come off. the rebooting will not be successful, so

5) u will need to boot the copy and get the directory u have pasted the dlls to (now u can proceed by the criterion u see fit, me I prefer the alphabetical order, while others I know proceed by size - choose the criterion u can best manage, whereby u can keep track of all the files, as u have to do some trial and error). so, supposing u go by alphabetical order,

6) copy the dlls starting with an a and paste only the needed ones (2nd option on the copy box) back to the system32 root folder of the (obviously) offline vhd that had not booted before.

7) try to reboot and repeat the operations until u reach the bunch of dlls that will allow the system to boot (to cut a long story short, the system boots and works ok if the dlls with the following initials

A, bootvid.dll, C down to ci.dll, D (here I need some surgical integration to make my favorite software work, but you might as well not), F, kd.dll, L, M, Pshed,dll, T, W, X

are pasted back into the original root folder.

The above procedure leaves u with nearly 700 dlls deleted from system32 (and I believe some more can be deleted letter by letter, with a little more patience), plus 600 from syswow64 = nearly 1300 dlls deleted. ain't that something!?

8) once u r thru, keep a copy of the system32 and syswow64 root dlls elsewere to be sure to be able to resort to whenever needed.

here are two pictures listing some other \windows and \windows\system32 subfolders that can safely be gotten rid of. unfortunately, the deletion can be carried out only by brute force on an online vhd. the gain in free space is about 300 megs. needless to say, whatever cannot be deleted should be left undeleted.
