Important Notes in making Portable Apps
=============================================================================
Hi

Notes Befor starting topic:
----------------------------
#########################################################

1_Thanks "Numo brito" ,That was very good idea making this page.I think we have learned many things
about portable Apps and some ways to make them.and now it is time to make a program to creat
portable programs,As "ispy"saied in link below post#6 :

"...this is the "Portable section" wouldn't it be nice if "we" could put together
a program or routine (preferably portable) that would do a similair thing to "Thinapp"....."

http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=6177

I am not programmer, but there are a lot of friends in Boot Land group that can do this.
So don't you think it is time to Do this???

hope it will be done.

2_ If you look at link below, you will see a lot of informations (about 40 pages) about portable
programs, making them and also several freeware softwares that are needed in making portable progs.

How to create portable version of programs
==========================================

Each program ,in installlation time,Make some files and folders in our system, and most of them add
some seetings to our registry and some time they delete or chang some of our settings in registry.

So Real needs in making portable version of programs,is this that we should know :

A)_ which files and folders are created during installing aprogram, and where?
:cheers:_ What changes are done in our registry during installation ?

Knowing answers of questions above is the master thing we need to make portable progs. So we should
use some softwares that can answer questions above.

we should use programs that can makes snapshots of our system before a program is installed, and
also should snapshot the system after a program is installed, then should compare them and let us to
know the changes made.

Some of softwares that can do this work or part of it are:

Total Uninstall - If you install any program by this software,it will snapshot your system befor and
after installing that and can give you:

1_ All changes made in system (files created or chaned, registry changes, folders created).
2_ Ready Reg file that installed program has done in system.
3_ Ready Reg file that has you system registry setting befor install.

This program is realy good software but sorry that is not freeware, any way you can use versions
4 to 4.9.5 of that in trial time to make all works i mentioned above (trial version 5 and above
will not give registry files).

Universal Extractor This software allows you to extract a lot of setup files. and so you will not need
to install some programs to work.i mean that this software will extract files inside setup files of
some programs, and if this extracted programs does not need registry settings, you can use that as
portable app.

VMware ThinApp I have talked about this software in link below.it is very good program and can do all
the work for you and will give an executable portable file for your program.jus very sorry it is
not freeware

NSIS You can find free portable version of this program.and you can use it to lunch your portable
programs.Note that Youll need the registry plugin for NSIS. and also Reg2NSIS, which can
convert .reg files to NSIS scripts. You can use this software if you have made portable app
in a folder and only want to launch that and apply registry changes by a click.

There are other tools that can help you to do the work. But hope some one in Boot Land will make
an script to do all ready for us.

Hi Shirin  ,

We are not in the realms of fantasy here see this:

http://boxedapp.com/boxedappsdk/

Creating virtual environments to run software that otherwise would not be able to run. Many it seems are thinking "outside the box" LOL! Sorry about the pun!

It will not be long before someone comes along & creates a virtual folder that programs can run within & what about virtual registries etc.

Mucho Regards,

ispy

COME ON, Ispy!
Read also the "attached strings":
http://boxedapp.com/...psdk/order.html
for LESS than € 299 I can buy a SPARE eeepc or this:
http://www.boot-land...?showtopic=5880

Unless thay are "Virtual Euros", I'd rather spend that amount of "real Euros" on something "real" I can actually throw against a wall when and if it does not work!

Hi Jaclaz  ,

The price tag is not really the point I am trying to make!

The point is popularity is driving the interest in virtually orientated software for portability, how long do you think it will be before someone reverse Engineers hacks thinapp & programs like it, as mentioned above & it will become open source. Many Program writers are writing in terms of portable software. Heck, I have made tentative steps into the world of code writing & my thoughts are leaning towards portable programs.

Even if you look at the price tag of Thinapp in comparison to boxedapp, although not a direct comparison as the program structure is different, Thinapp is..... & boxedapp is..... the price is coming down, God bless healthy competition.

Interest/popularity drives>the commercial sector which>& that creates competition>in turn drives the mother of invention neccessity>then along comes a creative person/collective who develop freeware, a nice little evolutionary circle transpires?

Anyway thats the jist of what I am trying to say albeit reading between the lines somewhat.

Regards & Best wishes,

ispy
