I read this fine topic that erwan.I posted about wimboot.

http://reboot.pro/to...e-boot-wimboot/

And wanted to create a more easy way to do the same thing.

Ok this will be a tutorial on how to use wimboot the easy way.

Wimboot works with windows 8.1 update 1 and higher.

Your allready installed os should be windows 8 or higher.

First da files:

we want to use mega downloader to get big files from mega.nz:

So start mega downloader and download this file:

and also dowload this small file:

Unrar the tools.rar file and you ready to go.

Why do you want to use wimboot?

Read trough the howto and see at the end of it how big your installed osses will be.

I made a howto that is included in the tools.rar but i will show the contents here also:

Spoiler

The last step of the tutorial you can repeat as many times as you like.

Ps. the "install.esd" file is from a windows 8.1 update 3 embedded industry Pro x86.

Made very small (shrunken).

I advice infanview to get image view back in this os:

Thats it, i wanted this tutorial to be easy like in that everybody could follow it.

And WHAT is instal.esd?

Why not use VANILLA easily verifiable media directly from Microsoft?

And vhdmanager should be downloaded directly from author site! - www.sordum.org

But if you want "VANILLA easily verifiable media directly from Microsoft" just take that, mine is an example to get a very small version.

Not that it is activated or such!

And yeah you could download vhd manager on the author site, just included it here for convienance.

And by the way, thanks for the tutorial!

My friend, I'm very sorry but you are late to this info, WinNTSetup let you create a wimboot install on a VHD directly.

I think my way gives more controll, for sure when it comes to adding or removing bootentries.

Ps. after looking at it again i see i did not use WinNTSetup the right way with wimboot.

install.wim from dvd does not work, ofcourse!!

From another topic a member was stating he or she does not like to download big files from mega.nz.

And if i could edit my own start topic i would add this to it:

It does not requires to download extremely large files to use my tutorial but i can't use the edit button on my own topic.

All what is needed is simply vhd manager:

https://www.sordum.o...d-manager-v1-3/

And 3 simple cmd files containing the following:

1.

Dism /apply-image /imagefile:C:/install.esd /index:1 /ApplyDir:K:\

2.

dism /capture-image /imagefile:C:\install.Wim /capturedir:K:\ /name:install /wimboot

3.

dism /apply-image /imagefile:C:\install.Wim /index:1 /applydir:K:\ /wimboot

Install.esd or install.wim in cmd 1 can be every install file from the dvd you prefere (from windows 8.1 update 1 and up)

So all you need from me to use my tutorial is under 1 mb and the actual howto.

Since April 2014 WinNTSetup is capable to install Windows on Wimboot mode, you can see it on my post No.42 on the thread you reference on your very fists post here, Quote of that Post:

Posted 30 April 2014 - 11:57 AM

WinNTSetup now supports Wimboot files http://www.msfn.org/...34#entry1076310

I have to clarify the link on that reference do not work anymore, there was a big failure some time ago on MSFN and many post were lost.

But I have been very close to that tool development since I was the first person who asked the author to let me translate his program, he had to make some little changes to can do it, after this it is now on a lot of languages.

But anyway if you like better to use command line just do it that way, but not go to hijack other people threads.

Install.esd or install.wim in cmd 1 can be every install file from the dvd you prefere (from windows 8.1 update 1 and up)

So all you need from me to use my tutorial is under 1 mb and the actual howto.

So, if I take *any* Windows 8.1 update 1 and up DVD, I can use "normal" (corresponding version of) DISM to:

1) Apply the "standard", "normal" install.esd or .wim to an empty (virtual) volume
2) Capture it with the /wimboot flag
3) Apply the captured image to (another, virtual) volume inside a .VHD file - again using the /wimboot flag

Nothing revolutionary till now, if I may, it is step #4 (missing above) that is perplexing (to me):

4) the .vhd may be as little as 1 GB, don't worry it will fit

But I suspect :dubbio: that what is missing are the n steps that allow between #1 and #2 to srink the size of the OS to the point that it will later fit into a 1 GB .vhd (that is to have this as an alternative to some "tutorial" by some other member).

So probably the tutorial should be EITHER:

1) Apply the "standard", "normal" install.esd or .wim to an empty (virtual) volume
2) Capture it with the /wimboot flag
3) Apply the captured image to (another, virtual) volume inside a .VHD file, - again using the /wimboot flag - the needed size of the .vhd  will likely be in the range 10 to 20 GB unless you shrink the source between steps #1 and #2

OR:

1) Apply the "standard", "normal" install.esd or .wim to an empty (virtual) volume

1b) Do whatever you see fit to reduce the number of files needed in the applied image to shrink the size to be later captured while keeping as much functionality as possible of the OS
2) Capture it with the /wimboot flag
3) Apply the captured image to (another, virtual) volume inside a .VHD file - again using the /wimboot flag

4) the .vhd may be as little as 1 GB, don't worry it will fit as long as you will have performed the correct steps in 1b)

Changing topic, here is my 3 steps tutorial to create a perfect omelette:
1) procure yourself some eggs, a pan some butter or olive oil, salt a stove (optionally some pepper).
2) do whatever you see fit to cook the eggs into an omelette
3) serve on a plate

Ok i like the way you are explaining things if they would be correct that is.

Your correct first explaination of point 4 you should keep because it is the truth.

4) the .vhd may be as little as 1 GB, don't worry it will fit

You can add the software and drivers you want in step 1 (i would not install things like office 2016) and still you can create a 1 gb vhd file to install your wimboot file to.

But you butchered my step 3 with your step 3 by making it a normall applying the wimboot file to a vhd.

It says:

dism /apply-image /imagefile:C:\install.Wim /index:1 /applydir:K:\ /wimboot

so yes it has the wimboot flag again.

If you follow my tutorial you can apply your wimboot file to a 1gb vhd.

Your point 1b) is totally wrong.

My bad. :(
Changed accordingly step 3 to include "- again using the /wimboot flag".

And of course my bad for misunderstanding your posts, I didn't thought that the /wimboot flag allowed to shrink a "normal" installation from anything between 6 and 12 GB into less than 1 GB.

I will leave the dubitative steps alone in the previous post (only for the record) crossing them out, can you confirm that this is a correct sum-up?

1) Apply the "standard", "normal" install.esd or .wim to an empty (virtual) volume
2) Capture it with the /wimboot flag
3) Apply the captured image to (another, virtual) volume inside a .VHD file - again using the /wimboot flag
4) the .vhd may be as little as 1 GB, don't worry it will fit
