I am having a doubt. Whenever we talk about multiple cores in processors, aren't those "cores" invisible to the software running on it? My perception is, had the processor been a multi-processor, then the operating system running on it should be aware of physical processors and arrange for bus/ memory arbitration. In other words, what does "core"  in processor technically mean? (Please do not point to Wikipedia or something similar). Any truly techical article on that?
