Yes, QEMU support a 64-bit Guest Seven SP1, and the 2007 version !
But I was hoping to hear when the qemu script will be updated to qemu version 2012 :)

With what host does QEMU support Win7 64-bit guest and to what degree?

With *any* host and up to 100° (Celsius).

See :

Now, finding a compiled recent version for a given host OS may be a problem.

Is there any advantage of running qemu over vmware player, assuming "normal" vm usage? Put in an other way, is there any reason to not use vmware player over qemu?

It depends specifically on WHAT is the intention/goal.
As said (and IMHO) advantages:
  • Qemu can (slowly) emulate a different CPU/architecture on *any* hardware (including 64 bit on "normal" 32 bit hardware, see linked to thread).
  • it uses "standard" emulated hardware (no need for "special" drivers).
  • generically speaking - it tends to have a more "orthodox" BIOS when compared to VMWare. (this can be useful when testing initial booting related thingies)
Disadvantages:But NO, if you have powerful enough hardware (64 bit and VT) for running 64 bit guests and/or for "normal" use the "other" VM's, including VMware player are IMHO good enough and actually faster.

Ok, then just want to add that mbr/bootsector debugging is still possible under vmware (at least in combination with IDA), and brings the advantages down by 1 (not considering linux hosts). Point is I don't see any reason (except under some very rare circumstances as mentioned above by jaclaz) to not use vmware player. So in my view, it is left with 64-bit emulation on any arch in favour of qemu..?

Yes I noticed, but is that really a drawback (I don't mind on my system..)?

The advantage being that a "normal" 2k/XP image (i.e. a dd copy of a disk or the disk itself through the ".Physicaldriven" connection) can be usually be booted directly.

Just recently I was trying to netboot some Linux distros, and it was possible only in QEMU. While its not per say an advantage, it shows QEMU might still be useful.
