File Category: Miscellaneous

Here's an application I created with an easy visual. It's main purpose is to convert between different byte sizes for you automatically. I've included all of the main types of byte amounts from a byte, to terabytes. Useful incase you have to know how many bytes a certain amount of Megabytes occupies for some reason.

Example: When using the disk management tool to shrink a drive or expand, you're required to make an input in Megabytes.

I've now updated the file with v2. Some new features include:
-Added Export functionality
-Results are now selectable

According to Wikipedia, and my own common understanding, not sure why you need this to move a decimal point!

Standards organizations such as International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) recommend to use the alternative term tebibyte to signify the traditional measure of 10244 bytes, leading to the following definitions:

  • In standard SI usage, 1 terabyte (TB) equals 1000000000000bytes = 10004, or 1012 bytes.
  • Using the traditional binary interpretation, a terabyte is 1099511627776bytes = 10244 = 240 bytes = 1 tebibyte (TiB).

So, did you mean the binary "tebibyte" or really a "terabyte"?

I don't use wikipedia for any source of reference, it's one of the most commonly unreliable sources there is for any kind of information because it's not always published to be true. But by my reading of this it says:

"In standard SI usage, 1 terabyte (TB) equals 1000000000000bytes"
"Using the traditional binary interpretation, a terabyte is 1099511627776bytes"

So if I was to claim that a Terabyte in my application was a binary interpretation it would be correct? My calculations are correct though. Technically even by this, a Tebibyte and Terabyte are the same thing, only Terabyte can be interpreted 2 ways? I would still be correct by using Terabytes.

1TB = 1099511627776 bytes

Yes - that is true, and while I agree about wikipedia, it is a good source to back up what we already know, and that is nowadays, when the disk mfgs talk about Terabytes (and even Gigabytes, they don't mean the binary value, but the base 10 amount...and don't get me started on what the USABLE amount of disk space is, since that is another whole can of worms...

I realize the world of useable disk space isn't exactly what it seems, and it's actually fairly deceptive to what a hard drive shows in the propterties shell context menu, but for everyday use and the way a computer shows the values in a properties area is based on binary, and not base 10, also known as decimal I believe?

Ahh, I actually still have that, but I never uploaded it to the downloads area, I'll do that right now, as i've fixed everything that needs to be fixed for the features that it currently has.

nice app.

couple of things I would like to see
  • make the input box calculate on [Enter]
  • make conversion results selectable for copy/paste
