Good

how did you do that?how did you know about all the sector and command, etc?

Even if it may seem to you like a sort of (black or white ) magic, it is really quite a simple set of diagnosing and fixing procedure, of course if you know how exactly, in detail a PC boots and know the grub4os commands syntax.

When grub4dos is installed, by default (i.e. unless you "force" it to NOT do it) makes a copy of the preexisting MBR on second sector.

Without a precise description of your actions BEFORE you asked for help, I had to check the values in both the "current" MBR (first sector) and of the "backup copy" (second sector).

These were three possibilities:

  1. Both CODE and DATA in the current MBR were wrong.
  2. Only CODE in the current MBR were wrong.
  3. Only DATA in the current MBR were wrong.

Since you got the "Missing operating system" message, which is "normal" for a Windows NT based system if the data is wrong,  the CODE was seemingly OK, and then the DATA wrong (#3 above).

By attempting to root to the active partition and chainloading directly the BOOTMGR, we verified it.

Reading the data in both MBR's I could get an idea of the size of hard disks that they were made for, one was for a 320 Gb Hd and one for a roughly 750 Gb one, once you provided the info that your hard disk is a 750 Gb one there were good probabilities that the data in the "backup" were correct, so we had the "backup", and here we had four possibilities:

  1. Both CODE and DATA in the backup MBR were wrong.
  2. Only CODE in the backup MBR were wrong.
  3. Only DATA in the backup MBR were wrong.
  4. Both CODE and DATA in the backup MBR were right

The simplest way to check was what I told you to do:

backup (on sector 61) "current" MBR and (on sector 62) "backup" MBR, in order to have a "way back" in case of issue.

replace the "current" MBR with the "backup".

After all it was situation #4 above. ;)

anyway,i would like to thank you for your assist.

You are very welcome.  :)

Well, you need an app capable of accessing the disk.

dsfo/dsfi (part of the dsfok toolkit) though 32 bit should run normally in 64 bit.

Most likely you will need Administrator privileges.

....

Wonko, great thanks for the instructions. I messed up with an USB stick and ended with "no grldr" message at boot (Win 7). This was the only real help I could find. Problem solved!
