Hello,
When considering the future, MD5 and SHA1 seem to be slowly replaced by SHA256.
Yet, the Whirlpool hash has been also been appointed as alternative but yet I don't see it used often.
While looking around the web, found a paper that details a way to calculate whirlpool even faster than current SHA methods: https://www.iacr.org...68/50860168.pdf
What is your opinion? Will whirlpool ever be popular and worth attention?
With my regards,
Nuno Brito

My guess is that SHA-* has a name build for itself after being in the industry since 1995 and being developed by the NSA. In contrast Whirlpool is developed privately and has only been around since 2001.
Whirlpool is only a year newer than SHA-2/256/384/512 but SHA-1 developed in 1995 has a big head start.
Whirlpool defiantly has its strengths and is worth the attention if you are considering secure hashes, and if it can catch up or surpass SHA calculations and get adopted by some big players I can see it becoming more mainstream. Without that happening though I'm not sure.
