I'm trying to recover a drive and someone suggested using Hiren's BootCD PE:

I downloaded the iso the and used the isotousb utility off the site to flash a usb drive, but when I try to boot from the usb drive it get's stuck at the motherboard logo (Asrock).

 

I tried flashing using rufus, I tried flashing to another thumbdrive, I even tried re-downloading the iso, no luck.

 

I also checked that secure boot is disabled in the UEFI.

 

Any suggestions?

You need to enable CSM in the BIOS and legacy boot.

I checked CSM is enabled, though as far as I understand this shouldn't be an issue because if you check the website this is an updated version of Hiren's BootCD with Windows 10 PE and UEFI support.

Can you see files on the USB drive?

Is it formatted as FAT32?

Does it start to boot if you use RMPrepUSB.exe - F11 to QEMU boot from it?

Is this the only ISO that does not work?

Try a different system.

Is this the first time you have ever tried to USB boot?

Sorry it's taken a while to get back, I got tied up with a bunch of stuff.

 

I contacted Hiren's website as well to see if I can get any input from them. I would still like to get Hiren to work, I'm finding more and more it would be useful for me.

 

I have an older laptop running a BIOS system, and I was actually able to get the Hiren's PE to load up through USB on it, so the image and thumbdrive work.

 

When I tried again on my current system I noticed there are 2 options to boot from the thumbdrive, UEFI & USB.

 

When I try the UEFI that's when it get's stuck on the Asrock logo.

 

When I try the USB option I will get the Windows logo, but it won't go any further. There's no circular loading logo.

 

How does Windows PE work? Does it use the local drive for temp files, or does it keep everything on the thumbdrive, or does it keep everything in RAM? I don't know if it makes a difference, but the system drive on my computer is formated with MBR.

 

Not sure what you are suggesting with RMPrepUSB, is it a Rufus equivalent?

Hirens PE is  based on WinPE - so it is loaded into RAM.

How much RAM does each system have? The current HirensPE has a 1.3GB boot.wim file, so I suspect you will need a system with at least 2GB of RAM if not more?

 

Does the AsRock system have a 64-bit UEFI BIOS or a 32-bit UEFI BIOS? HBCDPE only boots on 64-bit UEFI systems and the file must be on a FAT partition.

I have plenty of ram 32GB. I can't find the spec anywhere, but I'm going to assume the Taichi x399 has a 64-bit UEFI since Threadripper is an HEDT system.

 

I tried one more time creating a bootable USB with Rufus first using MBR/NTFS and also GPT/FAT. I tried loading it with CSM-on and CSM-off loading UEFI and USB.

 

The best I can get is booting the MBR/NTFS version, it will show the Windows logo and the USB drive light will show activity, but after a few minutes it will stop blinking and the system just sits there. The circular loading logo never appears.

 

When I boot with the GPT/FAT version it freezes on the Asrock logo.

It sounds like the system you are trying to boot from is 'sick'.

Have you tried the USB stick on other systems?

 

Remove the internal hard drive's SATA cable and see if you can then boot to USB.

If it boots OK, then connect the SATA cable and see if you can access the 'bad' drive.

I just downloaded a fresh copy and booted it just fine via Easy2Boot, I too like Steve suspect it's your laptop. Try the same stick on another PC to be sure.  I've booted Hiram's on a load of computers of all sort.
