I built myself a similar script based on ATI's most recent v8.1 (2008-01-26) package for Vista-32. It installs fine and, with full PnP detection, my ATI Radeon HD2900XT video shows up as expected in the MMC device management listings. But the Windows service for ati2mtag.sys seems to have an initialization problem.

If anyone has the time and the inclination to take a look at my attempt (script includes encoded driver files) and tell me where I went wrong, I'd be grateful. Download here.

It certainly would be nice to have Vista DirectX support at some point. But, speaking only for myself, I don't regard it as a major preinstallation environment item requiring your immediate attention. For me, the default video is good enough for now and, especially in the area of drivers, there are more important development issues to be dealt with IMO. I just bang my head on the wall whenever I can't get something (anything) to work exactly as I want it to. :)

I do agree completely that the Vista DVD itself is probably the best driver source to start with. As someone else (phox, I think) pointed out, it has a very wide range of ready-made hardware support compared to any of its predecessors. There's got to be some way (wishful thinking) to take advantage of its driverstore file repository without bulking up the PE build too much.
