How to install Grub4dos on Windows 10 HDD with ESP and MSR partitions?

Best Answer Wonko the Sane , 17 May 2020 - 09:19 AM

Well, that disk is GPT.

You will never be able to install grldr.mbr to a GPT disk, as it would overwrite the GPT disk structures, and of course it won't work as PBR as the bootcode PBR is ignored (if you boot in UEFI) and it will never be found (if you boot in BIOS).

There are a couple workarounds, but you won' t probably like them, only to re-connect you to the theme:

and you should be perfectly familiar with the issue :whistling::

I'm setting up a new PC for my Mum, which currently just has a 500GB HDD. I'm going to move her SSD across from her old PC in due course and use that as the boot drive but I need to make sure the new one is all set up and working before I do that. So I've partitioned the HDD with two 70GB partitions for Windows, so that I can restore a system image from her current PC to the second partition and once that's working OK I'll make an image from the HDD, move her SSD into the new PC and restore the image to that. So I need to install grub4dos so that I can easily boot between the various partitions whilst I'm setting things up.

This is the partition table for the HDD

Attached File  MNP-BI-PTable.png   18.07KB   2 downloads

and it seems to be incompatible with G4D as the MBR screen in BootIce looks like this

Attached File  MNP-BI-MBR.png   26.04KB   1 downloads

so I can't install G4D to the MBR. I tried installing it to the PBR of partition 0 (the ESP one) as shown here

Attached File  MNP-BI-PBR.png   21.02KB   1 downloads

and I put a copy of grldr on the D partition just in case it hadn't installed on the ESP partition but that didn't do anything and it just booted to Windows 10 normally.

So do I need to change the partitioning scheme to be able to use G4D and can I do that without wiping everything (not that there's really anything on there yet except Windows, so I guess I could just make a system image of the C: partition and restore that afterwards).

Or maybe (please read as "surely") it won't.

Really, you should know if something works to solve the specific question asked, before suggesting its use.

A GPT disk is normally NOT bootable in BIOS, and grub4dos won't work on UEFI.

Hmm, my memory is really bad! I should make a point of searching for my own posts before asking questions to see if I've had to ask them before. It was less than 2 years ago and I'd completely forgotten about my brother's laptop. Even now I don't really remember setting it up or how I came to be doing so. I think it must have been a birthday present for him from the family.

Anyway, hopefully I can avoid needing a grub menu on my Mum's new PC. It's running fine from the HDD at the moment and the SSD is connected, so I'll try just cloning the OS from the HDD to the SSD and then booting from the SSD.
