Hi ppl...

anybody know a good free ISO editor...

Just to add/remove a file from a .iso

I've used several tools and methods...

since extracting to folder, add/remove files and reencode...

to iso editors like MagicISO or WinISO (these have size limitation in free/trial versions)

thx...

Sure, but you have to consider how there is an underlying "futility" in such a tool and that anyway they are about something that has not changed since what, 15 years or so, it's like saying that a FAT12 filesystem driver has not been updated recently.

The CDFS filesystem has been designed as "read only", most of these "iso editing tools" do not actually edit *anything* :w00t: they often re-write a new .iso in the background, "porting" the current .iso settings.

And historically there were issues, which nowadays, and since a few years, are hopefully solved, still personally I wouldn't trust any of those.

The real issue is that the actual "standards" were not actually followed by everyone or left some "gray" areas "open to interpretation" or that could be read in different ways.

All in all it still makes IMHO much more sense to analyze the existing .iso and recreate via mkisofs or oscdimg, at least for some "less common" .iso's, particularly for bootable ones.

Hi All :)

Just for future reference & for anyone visiting this post in need of a free Iso editor

There is a freebie from Dirk Paehl (German if mem serves) called EasyISo 1.3 with Gui interface

extract:

******EASY ISO(CD) Creator 1.3*********
This program can create an iso and can burn your data to cd. Support:CDR/
CDRW and with DVD must be no problem. This program is 275kb great and FREEWARE
No install required. Run with all ASPI driver till XP. With all importantly
function. And no problem with other burn prog.

Support CDR/CDW/ DVD+RW/ DVD-R/DVD-RW (DVD not tested, but must be run).
On the fly burning, create no tempfile or iso while burning. Support Joliet
(long filename) Support Multisession High Performance File/Disc Caching.

This simple 256k program makes it easy to create ISO images and burn data to your CDs. It supports most if not all CD burner options found today in most high end programs.  Best of all  This program is purely an executable file and won't write any data to your PC or to the registry.

Here's a copy attached:

Attached File  easyiso.zip   281KB   313 downloads

N-joy!

MagicIso v 5 is free, if i recall, and will edit a cdrom for you.  It won't handle dvd or ufs data.

Eicfg can toggle the 'delete' flag on that file, so it should be possible to do the same for other files.  See eg http://code.kliu.org/misc/winisoutils/

I have replaced files on an iso with an ordinary hex editor.  The replacement file must be the exact same size.

Of course, even if the cdifs is 'read only', you can still do things in an image file.  For example, DFSEE, EComStation, etc, provide the necessary tools for replacing the registration files on the downloaded iso before you burn the image.

It's been a while since I've done this.  I know 7zip can extract the files and ImgBurn can create a new image.  I've used in it in a pinch when I didn't have UltraISO on a PC I was using.
