Hello,

I made myself a boot disk from bootdisk.com along with several utilities to get my machine to work in DOS mode for a special project I'm doing.

Ideally I'd like to have two running serial ports on my system for project testing.

Unfortunately, only one is built-in and two are on a PCI card.

My computer I recently bought online (with the serial card pre-installed) is an IBM Thinkcenter 3 Ghz processor.

I'm lucky to get networking operations going.

I accessed my bios, looking for settings for the PCI serial ports, and it only allows me to control the one built into the motherboard.

The other two do not get recognized at all by the BIOS or even DOS. I checked this within QuickBasic (by looking up the serial port addresses in memory).

When I look at the card in detail, I see the following labels on it:

Front:

COM A

COM B

CE Tested to comply with FCC standards

MADE IN CHINA

NM9735 REV C

and on the back:

SD-PCI9835-2S

CE

HS-IQ-P/I S/N No. T8 04110002380

And on one big chip soldered on the front, I see this:

NetMos

Technology

Nm9835CV

FM486-000

0441

So I'm curious, Is there any generic bios flashing utility that would make any bios scan PCI devices for presence of serial or parallel ports on PCI cards? If not, then is there a generic DOS driver I can install in autoexec.bat or config.sys that would make the PCI serial ports function as if they're real ports already embedded into the motherboard?

Thanks.

Yes and no.

Meaning that you need the PCI DOS drivers/utility specific for that card/chipset.

Namely, you want the file 9835_MIO.zip, (as an example) that contains the DOS tool

Be very aware that half to three quarters of the sites where you will find it will attempt to make you download a (senseless and crappy, besides creepy) "automagic driver checker/updater" make sure you actually download the driver only.

Even on Driversguide:

https://www.drivergu...driverid=119620

you will need to pay some attention to get the right file.

Then the stupid file above contains no instructions whatsoever, so you will want to get this:

http://download.konc...ation Guide.pdf

And - to be on the safe side - get also the actual driver from the actual manufacturer, via Wayback Machine, this is the last version I could find:

https://web.archive....ad_drivers.html

https://web.archive....ucts/NM/dos.zip

While you are there, get also (just in case):

https://web.archive....35/All_9735.zip

It is not clear if the chip on your card is a 9835 or a 9735

Then - unless you are very, very lucky - you will enter the wonderful world of IRQ conflicts and Port (re-)mapping.

The NM means NetMos, which was the producer of those chipset until 2000 or 2001 then it was acquired by Moschip, so you will find a lot of references to MCS9735 or MCS9835 by they are actually the same chips as the NM9735 and NM9845.

And now they are ASIX:

https://www.asix.com...ail&PItemID=126

https://www.asix.com...ail&PItemID=127

So you might want to try also:

https://www.asix.com...74;111&PLine=74

https://www.asix.com...27_20120928.zip

which contains also the docs and an example nmconfig.cfg file.
