Somehow I just lost it. I think I found it through a link from here, so I'm hoping someone remembers what it was called. It was just a very small, free app that ran from a Windows GUI. It could write the bootsector for XP or VISTA only, to USB or HDD partition. Then you just copy the rest of your files and that was it.

I just can't remember what it was called though. Any help would be appreciated.

Thinking a member wrote and shared it. Searched the basics, but no luck.

Thanks.

You sure?

Traditionally they are all Command Line apps, like bootsect.exe (that comes with Vista), bootpart.exe by Gilles Vollant and MBRFIX by Kaare Smith (for the latter there is a very old pseudo-GUI I wrote - that does not implement the newish bootsector abilities of MBRFIX - and one only announced by fuwi):

(unless I missed it's release)

jaclaz,
I have only been able to find command line apps as well, but I know it's out there.
thanks.

dera,
Yes, bootsectgui.exe is exactly what I'm looking for. Had to extract it from WIM file to be sure.

Nice script. I keep bootsect.exe and bootsectgui.exe in a desktop folder as well. Didn't miss it 'til it was gone!

Found this for Linux flavors. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks interesting.
UNetbootin home

THANKS.

@sLiM
sorry  I thought you were talking about a Freeware "self-standing" utility, not using normally Vista, I do not use bootsect.exe, thus I never paid attention to bootsectGUI.exe.

Good to know, however, thanks dera

As well, this Unetbootin appears very interesting, though from the "tutorial":
http://www.linuxmint...p...=42&t=14209
it seems like it needs a pre-fdisked/formatted stick, by using format om a USB stick, the result will be a "superfloppy" unless a MBR has been already properly installed on it.

Checkout "VistaBootPro 3.3" for working with Vista Boot Mgr and NTLDR.

http://www.vistabootpro.org/

"VistaBootPRO 3.3, which has literally now been downloaded by millions across the web, was developed to make changes to the Windows Vista Boot Configuration Data (BCD) registry quickly and easily, doing the job in a fraction of the time it would take using the alternative. VistaBootPRO allows users to easily and neatly organize their boot configuration entries from within all flavors of Windows."

I do not think there is a script for this program. It might make a good addition.

Thanks Sirquil,

I dual boot XP and VISTA on the same machine.

Bootsectgui.exe runs well from XP or VISTA. Also, requires no installation and small in size (330 kb together with bootsect.exe.) Portable too.

VistaBootPro 3.3 doesn't run from XP at this time.

bootsect is on the vista distros, can write an NT52 (aka xp) or NT60 (aka vista) boot sector.   You can find a version of it on any of your vista disks (6.0 and later) under \boot\bootsect.exe

bootsect {/help|/nt60|/nt52} {SYS|ALL|<DriveLetter>:} [/force] [/mbr]

Boot sector restoration tool

Bootsect.exe updates the master boot code for hard disk partitions in order to
switch between BOOTMGR and NTLDR.  You can use this tool to restore the boot
sector on your computer.

Run "bootsect /help" for detailed usage instructions.

A nitpick is needed.

By "master boot code for hard disk partitions" the good MS guys mean the bootsector/PBR/VBR code (which is updated with /NT52 or /NT60 switch), NOT the MBR.

NOT *all* versions of bootsect.exe have a /mbr switch (that allows to replace the MBR code), namely it was seemingly added to Vista SP1:
