I want to create a winpe 4.0 image. Which should not auto mount external drives like usb disk.

It is possible to prevent mounting of internal drives by editing the registry. But I'm failed to find a soltn for blocking usb mount. If any one knows about this please help

Hi

I wonder what prevent you from simply unplugging the external USB before booting the PE.

You can try editing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor Registry setting to disable external storage devices but booting from USB stick may or may not work ( paractical testing needed ). Please give it a try.

You can mount the WinPE image using DISM and then load the offline SYSTEM hive to change the startup value.

Hello Blackbeauty,

Please do read the information Wonko (the Sane) referred you to. Using the WinFE registry settings with a SanPolicy value of 4 (introduced in WinPE/WinFE 4.0 and also applicable to WinPE/WinFE 5.0) should provide the solution you are after. Please note that if you are booting from a USB device then the boot device itself will be mounted.

You could also try using Colin Ramsden's excellent Write Protect Tool (see here and here) - I haven't used this tool in a standard WinPE (without the WinFE registry modifications) at runtime, however it might work.

Good luck!

Regards,

Misty

Thanks Wonko.... I set the san policy to 3 and it will prevent mounting of all storage devices. and the links you provided are very useful. :)
