Making the smallest Win10 install (Wimboot mode) on 512 MB VHD

wimboot ramboot

Best Answer alacran , 20 March 2019 - 11:53 AM

Well, I think now this thread has all info, I'm going to make a summary of all relevant post you need to follow to be able to Create and Ramboot from a Wimboot VHD and also how to make a compressed copy (to keep as backup) of the coupled files required to wimboot.

I started this thread thinking the smallest the best, and was able to run a 512 MB VHD, as the name of the thread says, but during the development of this thread I change my mind and decided that a 1.5 GB VHD is a good size to load a VHD in RAM on an acceptable time, and this size VHD is also capable to Ramboot on PCs with a minimum of 4 GB of RAM.

Introductory info and required programs: http://reboot.pro/in...957#entry209470

Optionally apply unnatend.xml, services modifications and control Telemetry during install: http://reboot.pro/in...957#entry209480

R u sure they are not repeatable? I do repeat them, at least on 3 machines. And you claim u cannot repeat them on 1? Come on...want me to repeat get all of the fluff out in Italian or do I upset you? What to me is meaningful of it all here is to have squeezed windows almost to the essential, to have sped it up, to have "mitigated" it thru many stratagems, to have customized and stabilized it almost "the Mac way", so much so that I have been running the same version for months at the speed and efficiency of the first setup day and u call that unrepeatable? Most of this, thanks to some of u. If you or someone else can manage to get all of the fluff out any more consequentially than I have done so far, please do and show instead of dismissing what u seem to dislike.

Absolutely sure.

You only vaguely blab about what you achieved without providing any meaningful information about how you reached that.

This is exactly what is called an unrepeatable (by anyone but you)  experiment.

Pls ask what u do not understand and I will be glad to explain, of course untechnically, because I enter the IT world thru the window, not thru the front door.

@wonko

the monologue u r talking about (getalladafluffout) does not depend on me. I do my bit (writing), u do urs (not writing). so be responsible for not writing, which makes mine a monologue. if u wrote there would be a dialogue, but you have chosen against writing so far, and I hope for good reason, as u r so sure as u claim.

gzipping the fastest 8-word-size way is quicker than lz4'ing is obviously not repeatable and of course semi-random babbling. Sometimes u seem to act like the Microsoft guys when I was testing windows98, who whatever I said replied "can u be more specific about it?", again and again, until I realized I was talking to a machine. Do I have to entertain the same belief here? what is not repeatable about timing a gzipping (so detailed btw) session vs a lz4'ing session? Come on, this is stock behavior on the flair of I do not know what. what can I say, keep my monologues intact if that amuses u or if u have sound reason to ignore the info I can provide u with.

As for showing off, what would I show off about? these are results, as much as any other's. If u choose Mr. X's result to be more meaningful than Mr. Y's, u know what u r doing, so then again, I think it is for ur good reason. Me, I have learned to take any result as valid, guess what a fool I am, but putting myself in ur shoes I would not be so sure as u are. AFAICS, your behavior does not appear to be any less arbitrary than u claim mine to be.

good boy! now, how can I serve the community with a lite version of winsxs that works only on 19041 builds and does not on any other builds (at least overhere)?

1) start a NEW, dedicated thread, post there some (possibly meaningful) content related to the thread and its title
2) ?

I think I got u there, it is meaningful because it is meaningless (90megs) as opposed to regular (5or6gb) and it stays small and is of no advantage or hindrance to the system. it only takes erasing the original and putting this one that i will zip. i do not think there is anything else to explain. it would be part of getalladafluffout unless u indicate otherwise.

wonko, it's 21something megs 7zipped (lzma2 or so), it won't go thru the 2.44 meg barrier, unless u suggest otherwise.

thank u ever so much alacrán. c u in a bit, with what I will have found about xpress4k.

overall xpress4k compression vs overall lzx compression yields a 1gb-greater vhd or vhd-wim combo only to make a 1sec-shorter booting, at least here. Frankly, I have resorted back to lzx overall compression. to me, 1 sec less is not worth 1 more gb on my albeit large-enough disk.

Share VHD please? 1.5 GB Wimboot Win VHD

Could you share a ready (and of course, unlicensed) such VHD?

I'd like to play/ tinker with it before i go through all this process of making from scratch.

Apply Wimboot Image to a 1.5 VHD.

Then you make a new VHD lets say 1 to 1.5 GB to be sure it can hold 10x64 + all programs and info you added and make a new install using WinNTSetup wimlib-clc selecting wimboot option (no more unnatend, tricks or $oem$ need to be selected/applied) using previously created 10x64-WB.wim as souce now, this is made so fast that if once done you want to chage the size only delete the VHD and create a new one of desired size and redeploy the 10x64-WB.wim with wimboot option selected again. This 10x64-WB.wim needs to remain in same place to let the new wimboot VHD boot.

This were my tests during this procedure:

http://reboot.pro/to...e-6#entry209462

http://reboot.pro/to...e-6#entry209463

EDIT: wimlib-clc can also be used to deploy the wimboot captured image but WinNTSetup has given better results as it edits for us the BCD

EDIT 2: It is beter to use wimlib-clc since recently it has been detected WinNTSetup do not handle fine a custom WimBootCompress.ini

Could you share a ready (and of coursem, unlicensed) such VHD?

I'd like to play/ tinker with it before i go through all this process of making from scratch.

No, you have to make your own, but to make things easier you can use VHD_WIMBOOT from wimb, that program will make almost all required automatically, no risk to commet mistakes:  http://reboot.pro/fi...-for-os-in-vhd/

Or go to this GitHub page to see all his programs: https://github.com/wimbrts

Antonino, you do understand that for someone who is not familiar with the matter (and hence asks about the matter) your suggestions sound a lot like "you need a program go on the internet and get it" :frusty:.

i mean internal links, links inherent here. that is why I wrote "thread", meaning inside "reboot.pro", not elsewhere. when I learn how to post links, it wont happen again.

Well, it is not difficult :).

You first find and open in your browser the page you want to link to, then you select what is in the browser address and press CTRL+C (or right click -> copy) then in the body of your post you click so that you see a small flashing vertical line/segment (what we highly specialized technicians call "cursor") and press CTRL+V (or right click->paste), by sheer magic the address will appear right after the cursor.

To get the address of a specific post on the board, you click on the rightmost (top right) symbol (that resembles a V rotated clockwise 90 degrees) and a pop-up will appear containing an URL address, like above you select it, copy and paste. (you can also right click on the symbol and choose copy)
