I have been doing some more in-depth tests across a few different setups and can say that VSSCopy is awesome!

After applying that image (and fixing the boot record) Windows XP boots without any issues. When booted windows does detect the new HDDs and requests a reboot to apply updates (i am assuming this is where the reg keys are being updated).

My biggest hurdle now is that all my windows 7 installs are 64 bit where VSSCopy doens't run at all :(

Hi grrrd,

You can download the Windows SDK for Windows 7 to get the 64-bit version of vshadow.exe :

Hi Vortex,

Cannot you compile vscopy for 64 bits platforms as well?

Regards,

Erwan

My biggest hurdle now is that all my windows 7 installs are 64 bit where VSSCopy doens't run at all  :(

A 64 bit vshadow.exe:

rem Developer tools - Windows Development Tools - Win32 Developemt Tools
rem http://www.microsoft...3e-1fd44e0e2505
rem http://download.micr..._amd64/cab1.cab
rem x86: WinSDK_vshadow_exe_8944EA97_A5A4_4508_8B59_963683A75F83_amd64
rem amd64: WinSDK_vshadow_exe_7B47EEB5_8790_4D3D_A93A_F027305A74F8_amd64

There is a cab compressed backup_wim_win7.cab.zip as example.

Sorry for the name confusion, upload is limited to some names.

Hi Erwan,

Probably, I will have to convert the code to C. I will try to write the 64-bit version.

Here is another VSS utility.
Does not require the creation of a batch file and has a 64 bit version as well.

Nice. :)

Just to keep everything as together as possible, a not so unrelated thread on MSFN:
