Hello,

I've recently bought a micro SD card with 512GB for 20 euros from a Chinese site. Decided to take a chance and see if it was indeed possible to get so much storage for that kind of price. The result was OK. The drive is slow to read/write but does provide a real storage of 512GB.

What kind of tools can be used?

For Windows, this one might be your friend:

https://www.heise.de...t/h2testw-50539

btw: Works also on Linux/Mac when using Wine.

For Linux/Mac command lines you have F3:

http://www.linux-mag...ng-Flash-Memory

It seems the website has been offline, but it is possible to install the tool through any decent package manager.

apt-get install f3

or

brew install f3

After that be prepared to wait a long time since it will create 1GB files at the speed permitted by the card, which might take up to a full day to write.

Have fun!

I bought this for my phone last year:

https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Genuine Samsung, pretty good speed. I formatted it as exFAT and filled it up, capacity is legit. My current phone officially only supports MicroSDs up to 128GB, but people have tested higher capacities and reported them to work. I've had no issues with it.

@Steve6375 has a tool called FakeFlashTest....

Only for the fun of it, good ol' teardown of a cheap, very cheap, "Samsung 500 GB" USB hard disk ;) :

Damn!  That's tempting.  Although I may just wait another year until the 1 TB versions get this cheap

Years and years ago I got snookered into getting a 64 GB USB drive that turned out to be fake.  Amazon did a charge back so I lost nothing.

@Rootman: I didn't even know there was a 1TB MicroSD until you mentioned it. But now that I've filled this one up, I might just install it in my Raspberry Pi and make the switch. Prices need to drop first though.

I do wonder how they manage to squeeze more GB into the chip without increasing the physical size. I'm sure nanotechnology has something to do with it.

Yes, already exist 1 TB cards but still at some 80 euros or something like that.

In retrospective, 80 euros is not so different from the price of a conventional HDD with that much storage. Still I think we all expect that price to drop into the 20 euros in either case (less material, just plain plastic).

Writing speed is 20 MB/s, so it will take you a good while to fill up the disk.

@Nuno: You are complaining about 80 Euros? You do realize that (currently) the Euro is only worth slightly less than US dollars (market fluctuations notwithstanding, it is @ 1 Euro = 1.08 USD). So, there really isn't much of a difference. I think you are a cheapskate, 80 euros for a 1TB MicroSD is a steal. If the prices were that low right now, I would have bought one already, but only from a reputable vendor like Samsung.

You mean worth slightly more, of course, roughly you need 108.35 US dollars to get 100 Euro, or, to get 100 dollars I spend "only" 92.30 Euro.

An interesting point might be that US dollars prices (in the US) for electronics are usually (but not always) lower than those in Euro (in Eu), including the fact that you may have sale/local taxes, but we have VAT (that in some countries is borderline with "legalized theft").

Quick example:

https://www.amazon.c.../dp/B07MKSGZM6/

~95 US $

https://www.amazon.i.../dp/B07MKSGZM6/

~100 Euro <- this must be on offer :dubbio:

And look at it on amazon.de  :

https://www.amazon.d...uct/B07JGCKQD6/

the lowest is ~140 Euro  :w00t:

BUT, another model (which is actually still the same):

official Samsung (US):

https://www.samsung....-mb-mc512ga-am/

~150 US$

vs. official Samsung (IT):

https://www.samsung....3/MB-MC512GAEU/

~135 Euro

Writing speed is 20 MB/s, so it will take you a good while to fill up the disk.

That's one thing that's keeping me from going any larger on SD cards as well as USB thumbdrive media, even with top notch USB 3.1 devices the time to write data is so long for massive files it's impractical to use, unless the bulk of your data is static and you use a sync tool to write just the changed files.

Hopefully this will change soon if all the talk of new types of memory are going to come true.  It would be nice to carry around my complete Plex video and audio library on a USB thumb drive in my pant pocket.

The prices will keep getting lower. Hopefully the read/write speed will also catch up.

We already have cellphones with amazing features at really low prices too. Not so bad to live in this century.
