So, I'm looking to try Gentoo, to progress my knowledge in Linux. I have used Linux for a few years, I know Gentoo is for advanced users. But in all the distros I've tried, I feel like I'm not learning enough, being pushed hard enough to become a master. So I figured I need to try something more advanced. Numerous attempted installs of Gentoo in VirtualBox have failed, it's an extremely difficult distro to install.

I also know that there is Funtoo, based on Gentoo, and started by Gentoo's former leader, Daniel Robbins. He split with Gentoo after some disagreements with others on the team, and not too long after he started Funtoo.

I've been researching on them both and am trying to decide which to settle with, they both sound good.

Suggestions?

I never try gentoo, but you might find this useful:

I’ve used gentoo for a long time, it’s too easy (for me) to get OCD about per-package use flags, mixing stable/unstable versions, adding patches and doing super-minimal kernel configs.

You end up with a lot of time invested into learning and mastering a skillset that might be of no use to you outside of your own computer.

Oh, and webkit, qt, llvm, libreoffice compile times are a giant timesink.

So you might feel good about yourself when it’s all working properly, but if you have some other thing to do (like actual work on the computer), then it might get in your way.

Oh, and with most binary distributions, your backup strategy would include your files/configs and the list of packages you have installed from that distro. On gentoo, you actually need to back it all up: portage repository, compiled binaries, source code archives, header files… everything. Unless you want to recompile it all (many hours) when (not if) hardware failure occurs.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like it, I’m just not using it at the moment.

You can follow their guide to install it inside a chroot jail, you’ll get a sense of what Gentoo is without risking anything to your system, you can do that from pretty much any distro. Once the bind mounts are done and the stage3 + portage are downloaded, verified and properly unpacked (check handbook for tips), it will be happily compiling inside that chroot:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Chroot

Be sure to also follow their official installation handbook, since that goes into much more detail.

What if there was an easy way to install Gentoo?

It is called CloverOS and it is quick.

CloverOS is nice and simple, it's definitely Gentoo at the core. But in my tests, even when choosing the manual install option, you are still only allowed to choose the root partition. You can't choose a filesystem (even though ext4 is the obvious choice for most, I still prefer using F2FS on an SSD). You also can't choose a boot, home, swap, or other partitions. And the installer will always install GRUB2 in legacy mode, no matter how it is booted. I managed to boot the iso in UEFI by extracting it to a FAT32 flash drive, then extracted the efiboot.img into the root of the drive. Without this step you can only boot it in legacy, even despite the presence of an efi folder/files in the iso. And even still, it will install in legacy mode even when the installer is booted via UEFI. It doesn't even ask for a FAT32 EFI system partition, nor does it create one. The resulting install is bootable but only in legacy mode. Clearly, they did not consider a UEFI install when they created this modded distro.

Another thing, and maybe you missed this point, I want to build Gentoo from scratch and get the learning experience, not take the easy way out. So, while Clover looks good, I'll leave it for use in a VM only and continue trying to install the real deal.
