Interesting news from Microsoft's Windows Division Head Steven Sinofsky:

Bringing Hyper-V to “Windows 8"

This means, VHDs are going mainstream. :)

In addition, Win8 Explorer will natively mount as drives ISO and VHD images:

This was definitely a development idea from Windows2Go booting they previously had. A spark of imagination in their ideas for this new Operating System in the WindowsNT family. I'm curious to see what their final idea of a Windows 8 will be though. So far things seem fairly interesting for this new Windows version soon to come out.

Edit: Just pretend I gave you a like for your thread here. I still can't click the button :)

That's a new direction for "Win install from ISO" techniques development. :) I wonder, if MS may soon offer installing Win8 natively from ISO as well, since CD-drives become less frequent nowadays in new PCs and Laptops.

@cdob
Judging from what is written on the given blog post:
http://blogs.msdn.co...-vhd-files.aspx
it seems nothing much different than the right-click option we now have with IMDISK, only fully integrated in the Explorer (or Ribbon or whatever).
The question is if the underlying driver is/will be like IMDISK a non-bootable one or like Firadisk/Winvblock a bootable one (and/or if it's use will be integrated in the BCD/whatever as an available boot choice).

I asked at above blog to support command line.

Win8 Dism.exe does mount VHD files, but no ISO files.

I guess VHD driver support ISO files too.

A full integrated solution require bootmgr support too: define ISO file at \boot\bcd. However I doubt support at Win8.
A half manual approach would be nice so far. Boot a default boot.wim, mount ISO file at diskpart.exe or dism.exe.

As often happens a semi-random idea. :ph34r:

Does Windows 8 provide VSS drivers?
http://reboot.pro/6492/

If I recall correctly they also allow .iso mounting, but the whole point is still whether the "whatever" driver will be integrated in the "boot mechanism". :unsure:

There's hope;

CD and DVD image files (ISO) are not supported before Windows Developer Preview and Windows Server Developer Preview.
