OK These days I was trying to copy my windows xp setup disk in my pendrive and install it from there. I became mad because I was looking for something very easy to use that just take seconds to do what I want. This software exist! it's rufus! Rufus can make a bootable usb disk using MS-DOS stored in the system or using a system ISO. You can create Windows XP, Windows 7 or Linux bootdisk very easily!

Posted Image

these are the steps to follow!
  • Download rufus from here
  • Plug in your USB Flash drive
  • to make a Windows bootdisk (Windows XP/7) select NTFS as file system
  • then click on the buttons that looks like a DVD drive, that one near to the checkbox that says "Create bootable disk usng:"
  • Choose the XP ISO
  • Click Start
Done!

Enjoy :)

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to format my sister's netbook, running windows xp, and I need such bootable usb disk. I've done this before but only with linux systems so I have a problem/doubt.

I followed the tutorial and managed to create the disk, I can only execute it from "My computer" but what I want is to properly clean the computer hdd (e.g. with gparted) and start the reinstallation when booting the pc, as I used to do with CD or with linux.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you!!

Well for a start, try describing what you see and explain exactly what happens.

Given that I and quite a few others have tried Rufus using an XP ISO to USB flash and booted it and installed XP from a USB flash drive drive successfully - how are we supposed to know from your description what is wrong?

Try the latest Rufus v1.3.2. That created a bootable usb that went thru the install phases of win xp.

I have tried to install xp to a netbook having linux with using rufus. It seems that flashdisk is a bootable drive now and tries to install xp to the netbook but it gives an error saying  " Setup cannot find the end user Licencing Agreement" (EULA) then exiting the setup.

How can i solve this problem any suggestion?

I had a similar problem with an old version - please ensure you use the latest version of rufus.

What source ISO are you using? I used an XP SP3 standard ISO and it worked OK on an EeePC 904HA.

If you are having problems, please give details about models, hardware specification, procedure, etc.

Oh well,

EeePC 901

Microsoft Windows XP Home SP3 OEM
Direct untouched ISO of original disc iso.

In the microsoft help site it says this situation occurs when the harddisc of PC was not configured for windows and give some suggestions but all of them require XP CD.

Try Easy2Boot - just add your ISOs  to \_ISO\Windows\XP folder (ensure filename is correct).

You're Welcome ;) Rufus is also the best method to create a Linux boot disk (it can't implement persistence yet) but if the iso has any problems such as the vesamenu.c32 file corrupted it asks you if you want to fix this problem and it does it for you :)

You make one from your ORIGINAL INSTALL CD.

There are several tools that will be able to create a .iso image from a CD, this is one among the simpler ones:

Yes, you can - but it wouldn't work...

That is why Rufus and other programs like WinSetupFrom USB and Easy2Boot were developed. XP Setup/Install does not support USB booting without some trickery....

JFYI, at the time the whole idea began, it took several months of experiments to several people to manage to actually install XP from a USB, the methods nowadays used tend to be much simpler (especially for the "final user") but to have an idea of what happens with "just copy the files", you might want to read the "historical" thread here:

http://www.msfn.org/...l-from-usb-key/
