After having Norton SystemWorks stall during installation onto a Sony Vaio with Windows XP Home edition, I got the error message: "INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit." upon the following bootup. Now there is no way to restore the HD using Sony's F10 Restore. And even with system generated Restore Discs, it's not reading the CD-Rom drive to restore. Any suggestions on how to fix? I did go to Microsoft and generated Windows XP start-up disks and now can work in a dos environment.

I had a Vaio when they came out on 1998 - the main flaw is that the proprietary hardware is very specific to sony itself and avoids generic drivers - also noticed this on similar vaio models that used incompatible drivers making it harder to track down the tweaked ones specifically for your machine. (even harder to make it linux hardware compatible)

Can you post the model details for your machine and possibly a picture?

Would really help to understand what could be going wrong.

I've previously seen that message when the reading was defective - from either the CD ROM of even from the CD drive. Does your Vaio comes with a builtin drive or a separate one using USB/PCMCIA?

Be carefull about the connection cables/connectors - mine were somewhat fragile and sometimes wouldn't connect properly - had to try a couple of times until it booted correctly as expected.

If possible try booting from an USB external CD/DVD drive or create a USB bootable pendisk and if this works then you should try to use your restore images.

Might also be a good idea to try with a retail version of windows XP just to check if the problem isn't coming from your CD's.

Good luck! :P

You're using a Sony PCG TR3A, right?

Sorry for not noticing on the search form from your screenshot on the attachement.. :P

Here's a quick pic:

Please try with an external USB drive or from another XP CD to see the results, thanks! :P
