@ctmag: I just noticed that the DVD shipped with the last magazine c't contains a WinBuilder/VistaPE based recovery system - nice work (of you, Nightman and the others).

I just startet to test it (using 2008 as source) and found an issue on Windows XP. This may also a problem is other VistaPE versions or the GRUB-installer itself:

After successfully creating the ISO tried to copy it to my USB drive (and noticed that my robocoy syncing is still in use ).
The step that does not work is step "3 make bootable" (section BootUSB). The grub4Dos installer fails to install grub with the message "Can't run the background program". Using Sysinternals process Monitor I could only find one file system error that may be the cause:

grubinst_gui.exe tries to access the non existent file "C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\systest.sdb".

thanks for the info...strange error...never had this myself, but i will keep it in mind...there is not much i can do about the grubinst_gui program...hope only few users have this bug...

Well, the grubinst_gui wasn't what I would call a "good fit" at this point - therefore I developed a replacement that perfectly fits at this point:

1. The users do not have to enable anything
2. The list of available devices shows additionally to the size the mount points - therefore it is much easier to find the correct device.

The only "disadvantage" of the new tool is that is is some KB larger than the original one (because it had been developed in Delphi) - but I don't think that is is really a problem...

2009-04-19: Updated the attachement with a new version that loads grubinst.exe from the directory where grubinst_gui.exe is located instead of the current directory.

Well, the grubinst_gui wasn't what I would call a "good fit" at this point - therefore I developed a replacement that perfectly fits at this point:

Is this a "general use" program? I mean can it be used outside of the VistaPE c't edition, both functionally and from a license poitn of view?
Does it have a particular version of grub4dos "embedded"?
Can I link to this in the grub4dos forum as an alternative to "plain" grubinst_gui?

Hi jaclaz,

do whatever you like with that program. It's 100% my work and free to use/copy for everybody.

It does not contain the grubinst.exe. It executes it from the same directory (or somewhere on the search path) using the "--mbr-disable-floppy" option.

And if there is interest in the grub4dos forum - feel free to link.

has been discussed a lot here before: It is included with the c't magazine (geman) and you have to bay it, no official download...but of possible i will create a reduced version for download as i find the time...

I have tried it on my Vista-64 system and there is an empty list. When I try to 'run as admin' I get the error "Windows: Station not ready: Exception processing Message 0xc00000a3 Parameters 0x000007EFDC2740 . . . ."

On my laptop/WinXP it works just fine.

What I am looking for is a command-line tool to install grub4dos on a logical drive.
Background: I am making a multiboot USB and want to distribute it. Thera are some DOS / bootdisk / WinPE / Linux distro's on it and i want to chainload syslinux (original menu's). This only works when i first syslinux x: and then grubinst (hdy). But I can't convert x: to hdy.

The grubinst_gui tool has been updated. Now it works even when started using the "Make bootable" link from VistaPE c't edition Finalize/04-usb.script.

But I got a err message "System Error: Code:2 System cannot find the specific file."
while I run it in XP pro.

Anyone can help?
