I've been desperately trying to find some sort of pre-made / template / guide to make a bootable ISO or something that will allow me to boot into a very basic OS but with VMware Workstation 8.0 + pre-installed and able to run vm's from the local HDD or external media etc...

if it has to be VMware player, then that is also OK, but workstation is preferred

I have already come across the MOA project, and that looks very similar to what i am looking for, but it runs a much earlier version of VMware and it doesn't seem to be active anymore.

At the moment i am not even so concerned about the OS being light on resources. i just want a PE that has VMware on it

My aim is (eventually) to have a portable USB i could use in practically any computer, that can boot into VMware and run multiple OS's simultaneously.

Vmware player can be used after booting with 7 PE made with Make_PE3

See Help file VMWare_player.txt in Make_PE3_workHelp_Info

More interesing is to use Mini XP and Mini 7 Image files booting direct from USB by using Grub4dos Menu.
The MultiBoot portable USB-harddisk is made with BOOT_USB.exe

Mini XP Size 150 MB http://www.911cd.net...ndpost&p=171411
Mini 7 Size 500 MB http://www.911cd.net...ndpost&p=171436

Thanks for your suggestion winb,

I followed the links you posted and looked at the information - i'm gonna give it a go but i'm still looking around for a way to run VMware Workstation, specifically Version 8 +. do you think it's even possible , or that somebody has made one yet?

Even though i only just joined these forums, i have been reading around them for quite a while, and thanks to the great support and community i have succeeded in building a custom Grub4Dos boot usb with some awesome utilities and OS's. i just thought it would be just one more step awesomer if i could boot into an almost bare metal hypervizor and make new VM's and use other VM's... etc...
It's my dream...

Did you have any luck with this venture? I need to do the same.

If your plan is to use this as a means for booting an OS that's already installed within a VM on any computer, you might note that the OS installation has to support the VM "hardware" and that there will be an initial "hardware" discovery process the first time you boot the OS installation within a VM.

You could also consider using QEmu (available on some "live" Linux distributions) or Xen.

or virtualbox ...  The issues (as mentioned) is that you need more than just a little bit of help to get to the point you can run a hypervisor or emulator.   What is the "real" issue you are trying to solve, not how are you trying to solve it?
