Windows without windows: Microsoft goes command-line with Server Core
17th October 2006 Paul Schnackenburg Windows

It must be a great irony for Linux proponents that the next version of Windows Server can run without any GUI at all. Script jockeys rejoice; the rest of us despair!

This version, called Server Core, provides only a command prompt for local administration.

This is actually kind of cool. A way to save money with just the bare essentials. Most of us script everything anyway. Or as much as we can.

Thanks for the info Alexei, I've counted around 70 dll files that will be used as core - I think this should be around a bit bigger in size compared to picoXP and completely stripped away from GUI - adding network support.

I would almost suggest an attempt for releasing much cheaper licensing for this NT release and attempt to get some market share from linux servers.. :P
