I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix to an older laptop with a broken cdrom. This laptop will not boot to USB. I installed Unetbootin to my Windows 7 computer and connected the laptops HD via a USB enclosure I have. I clicked the "Diskimage" radio and chose my ISO file. However when I select "Type" "Hard Disk" I can't choose my laptop drive.

I tried the USB method, and had to choose "Show all drives" to get it to see the laptop disk. Unfortunately I can't select "Show all drives" when I have the "Hard Disk" method selected. Of course when I put the prepared disk back in the laptop it doesn't boot.

I tried using the command line, in the hope that that would override the settings but no dice.

Can anyone suggest a method for me to use the frugal install to get Ubuntu on this machine?

It seems to me like you should try WUBI:
