This is not the purpose of Windows PE. It is an environment for debug, deployment and other emergency short term use situations. It wasn't designed to be a normal use system. What exactly are you trying to achieve?
I also use WinPE and have put on the stick TotalCommander ( to manage files), HWinfo ( to get hardware information when I need it). Autoit scripts also work on WinPE and WinSCP (FTP/SCP client).

ChrisR;s WinPESE WinBuilder projects  give a 'fuller' WinPE. This topic is rather old now...

Hi Expert

What I liked/expected to get with the bootable usb stick was a mini System of Windows (PE) 7/64  bit!

With Qdir I have an Explorer which allows me to watch the Volumes and files etc. on the existing Computer and nothing more!

How can I get this Explorer functional like the one I installed directly on the PC and how can I start this mini System (PE) from this stick

Thanks a lot for your help

JAS

J.A. Sutter,

Like suggested, you can use the Win10PESE project by Chris R & JFX.

Once you configure the image to your liking, you'll get a nice bootable "mini Windows 10" which is very functional, with a desktop, taskbar, start menu and the regular Windows Explorer (and support for runnig 32bit apps in a 64bit WinPE).

Following my guide gets you a basic WinPE environment without the Explorer shell, and without 32bit support. It's very basic, but also very light.

Good luck.

Hi

Thanks a lot for your help!

What I exactly like to achieve is the possibility to boot from a USB Stick and got a platform to be able for instance to delete the boot Partition c:\ periodically and install it anew, to delete all the trash, which accumulates while working with the Computer, installing/uninstalling programs etc.

Among other things also to start programs from the stick, which I normaly have to install on Harddisks to use them ...

The IT World doesn't consist only of experts, so, if there is an easier way to do that, I would appreciate to hear about!

Delete and re-install the boot partition? That is an unusual operation... The best way to that would be by using the Linux dd command.

To delete trash as you call it you can use CCleaner from within your normal Windows OS. Very good cleaner, combined with the Windows built-in cleanmgr command.

Install/uninstall programs - you cannot install or uninstall the programs installed on the normal OS from Windows PE. You could remove them, but it is hard work. Better to uinstall the normal way, from add/remove programs.

"Among other things also to start programs from the stick, which I normaly have to install on Harddisks to use them" - this is also not a very good idea. As I said before, Windows PE is for emergency/recovery only. Not for running normal programs. Even if you can install and run them somehow, the environment is limited.

Maybe what you want is Windows ToGo:

Or, if you want recovery tools, try a Linux live environment. There are plenty out there created for portability and loaded with tools.

You can try the GEGeek Tech ToolKit 10.12. Keep this on the USb drive with several ChrisR's WinPESEs or WinToGo

After udating win 8 to Win 10 you need to delete and re-install the boot Partition to get a clean Installation for instance.

The Linux dd command I don't know at all and with the CC Cleaner one should be very carefuly not to delete important system files.

With an Iso Image CD I was therefore allways on the more secure side, but to be able to do it with a USB Stick would be greatful.

Probably the Windows ToGo way is a good idea, i'll try thatone, if that covers my needs!

JAS,

You can do all that with the basic WinPE that you've created using my guide.

Please note: Since Q-Dir does not refresh automatically after file operations (copy, delete, move), you must hit F5 to refresh the view and see the changes you've applied.

Hi ericgl

Thanks for Your answer!

I had succes with Your tutorial, it boots and starts Q-Dir but the handling of this Q-Dir is not so easy as it is, when you install it on your PC.

The whole Story of Q-Dir appeared to me like "frozen", but I'm going to try it again according to your note...!!!

TotalCommander works much better in WinPE.

Here is some more information on how to boot with Win10PE or Win8.1SE from USB and then to Install Win 7/8/10 from USB by using WinNTSetup.

Also in these WinPE you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant for patitioning and AOMEI Backupper for Backup and Restore of your System.

Update:

I've added a Troubleshooting section at the end of the guide on 1st page.

Hope it helps for those having trouble booting from the USB drive.

Cheers!
