For me the only changed detail WimLib / reWIM is the topic title.
The download name and the download contents is still WimLib.

New version uploaded.

GUI support is now functional, you can use the nice window to manage a WIM archive:
  • Add a file
  • Remove a file
  • Extract a file
Then press the commit button to perform these changes.

The GUI is not perfect but it should be functional, enjoy.

The GUI is not only a nice enhancement. First tests let me say "It is a new powerful tool" :1st:
reWIM can export compressed files w/o issues.
Does that imply that compressed capture will be possible soon, too? :dubbio:

IMO compression should be in the priority list on position #1.
For me practical use in a project is not recommended, as long as there is no compression.

Deeper tests concerning compression.

I used a (copy of) boot.wim from a win7 install CD. As known, it is compressed.
Tree display and and export ok.
But import of a file gave errors, and after that the WIM was defective and could not be opened any more (also not by 7z).

You should currently disable the "import" button for comressed WIMs.

IMO compression should be in the priority list on position #1.

In the past booty#1 got stuck when dealing with the undocumented compression issue: http://reboot.pro/5308/ and 4 years have passed in the meanwhile. With or without compression, we are moving forward.

You should currently disable the "import" button for comressed WIMs.

I will report this issue.

New version uploaded, more CLI options are now available for testing:
  • /Custom to add a custom file onto the XML portion of the WIM archive
  • /Boot to set the WIM archive as bootable
  • /Capture to add the files from a given folder onto a new WIM archive
  • /Add to add a file onto an existent WIM archive
  • /Remove to remove a file from a WIM archive
  • /Dir to list all files inside an image from a WIM archive
  • /Apply to extract all files from an image onto a directory

Details are available on the first post or from the listing on the download portal.

It took a long time, I'm glad to see this available.

At reWIM the support for xpress/lzx is nearly complete as well.

So the developers Nuno and Igor are competiting in building the final solution. :raygun:

If there is a competition on WIM handling, let it be a friendly and nothing more. I like 7zip, I use 7zip and just didn't worked with Igor on this matter because we have different goals. :)

AFAIK, 7z at the moment does not:
- create WIM archives from scratch
- make them bootable
- allow adding a custom XML
- create MS compatible compressed archives

We are working with different goals. Once we can create bootable WIM archives I will just move onto other tasks such as raw registry write while Igor will keep working on WIM archive support and one day make all these things available as well. Right now I need a platform tool independent for this task and this is what we have done.

New version available.

The current version is finally capable of creating fully compressed WIM archives. The ratio of compression is similar to what is made available with imagex.exe

Since we have freedom of implementation, we tested the use of parallel multi-threading when creating compressed files. On multi-core desktops this program will be capable of assigning tasks to each of the available CPU cores and speed up the processing.

With this version the project is considered as functional. New features/bugfixes are welcome, albeit my focus will now move to other code that needs attention. For example, I just tested Windows 8 WIM archives and their definition is (again) different from Vista and Win7 without a specific advantage other than seemingly making our life difficult to work with these dreaded archives.

So, Win8 support will later be added if there is demand and need. Right now I believe that Win7 WIM archives are good to be used as bootable media.

Hope you enjoy this release.

With my regards,
Nuno Brito

The latest version works great to build a target WIM. (Small concern about 8 minutes compared with < 2 minutes WimCaptEx. But that is the price for Billy-The-Gates independency).

I was not able to /apply a WIM. The complete syntax for that is nowhere (or I'm blind ?) documented.
  • Image index?
  • Output pathfile?

Peter

Overall: :2nd:

BTW: The license file should be targeted to reWIM, rather than WimLib.
In the multiPE implementation I already changed this.

Error report using reWIM version 1.4

Using the GUI to extract an image, leads to the following error:

java.lang.IllegalStateException
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.compress.lzx.LZXDecoder.decodeBlock(LZXDecoder.java:75)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.compress.lzx.LZXDecoder.decode(LZXDecoder.java:45)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.util.DecodeUtil.decode(DecodeUtil.java:52)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.WimExtractor.extractFile(WimExtractor.java:66)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.WimExtractor.extractFile(WimExtractor.java:52)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.WimExtractor.extractFile(WimExtractor.java:52)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.WimExtractor.extractFile(WimExtractor.java:52)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.WimExtractor.extract(WimExtractor.java:41)
at com.name_replaced.wimtool.gui.reWIM$ExtractFileThread.run(reWIM.java:376)

With German Enterprise SP0, Enterprise SP1 and Ultimate SP1 it happens with the progress bar at 13%.
With English Enterprise SP0 it happens with progress bar at 6%.

Request: Woulde be nice to have a /info command line option which exports GUI's "Info" text to a file.

Peter
