There was recently an office cleanup and plenty of old hardware was going to waste.

 

On the middle of these things, I've found a little treasure box: a ThinkPad 760D laptop from 1995.

What's more, it has a fully functional Windows 95 installed inside.

 

Included was a floppy drive (proprietary connector), a CD-ROM and a PCMCIA card with LAN network adapter. The floppy drive is working but isn't very practical to move software back and forth. The CD reader seems broken and won't read discs with data, but the LAN adapter was really useful.

 

I discovered that LAN access is still working and was able to access other devices. Internet Explorer from this time was OK but limited and so tried looking into the FTP command for exchanging files. It worked OK with another laptop on the same LAN acting as FTP server, the main difficulty was remembering again how to push/pull files around.

 

Got WinZip installed but it kept failing to decompress files because the modern compressors use more memory than what was available on the laptop. I'm now getting the machine ready for some good old time games that I miss from the 90s.

 

Any tips on what to add on this machine while keeping Windows 95 inside?

work more in cmdline, the Win32 bit winnt or for win95 should work.. infozip as example ..

or the old rar who works in cmd with surface .. should help too ..

Hold this mashin like it is, for orginal formated Disk..

4 Partitions, dos fat16, Win95, Win98SE and datapartitions.

(Parted Magic bootable dosdisk with the program on it..)

i have now a i586 and want install there WinNT4,win2000,WinXP and datapartition.

We have also WinME and other .. so 2 Laptops with 3 different Systems and

you have access on originals, with the 2 laptops can you make also a network

and by boot can you move important datas on the 4th partition fat16 in zip with 8 sighns ..

supporting only 16bit-zip and 32bit-zip both with 8sighn-name.zip

or rar.. with long name support .. and so on..

you can also format orginal with dos, play old dosgames , make via prompt/esc cmd's blue back yellow forground/text,

looks cool and professional you can format and partion via usb (if works) harddisks and disk's in an original system.

and can from time to time refreshing you knowning over different systems.. this helps you for new ideas and

possibility's in more modern, the old tricks and gimmicks was works, who maby works in modern also,

but anybody have forgotten this old things.. and have landed in the sunken..

 

some hardware is really elite, if you thinking about !

Trumpet Winsock has an FTP server module that can allow you to actually serve FTP from Win 95. It just works!

Thanks. I was trying to run FileZilla and even the older versions weren't running.

 

Any other interesting tools that I can try installing on this machine?

it might be worth installing FreeDOS here, the most recent editions come with the modern networking tools: http://www.ibiblio.o.../group-net.html

Dear Nuno,

back in the good old days I used a DOS program "QQ.exe" to start various backup- and partitioning-tools.

Unfortunately I was not able to find it by Google.

The main things about it (as far as I remember):

It had to be installed to a small partition <1gb

An entry in autoexec.bat started the GUI where several buttons could be defined to launch programs.

Very stable.

Can the Win98 Machine Handle Minecraft?
