I'm running Win Pro x64 as "host".

Yes, I can create VHD's in Disk Management.

I'll download Enterprise and give it a shot.

Thanks for your reply. I'll return with results.

Hello wimb,

great tool!!! using it for a dedicated audio ramdisk.

While RDP is working well in Portable, I can't get it to work in Mini. Appreciate some guidance on which files to delete from the Mini exclude list to get RDP up and running again.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I have a question about this project.

In order to make the image universal, I'll have to sysprep it before creating that vhd, right? I want such an image but I need it to work on every computer.

Windows 8 contains all the drivers needed for booting on every computer.

So the VHD made according to the description is Universal.

In VHD_W8_Compact I checked both net frameworks and created the vhd but it's not working. Any application that requires net 4 gives an error.

In VHD_W8_Compact I checked both net frameworks and created the vhd but it's not working. Any application that requires net 4 gives an error.

You have got to install such net 4 apps in the W8 source so that registry is ok and check that app can be used in the source.

Then make your Portable W8 VHD with extra size e.g 500 MB extra.

That's  the thing, it works in the source because I've manually installed net framework 4.

But not in the portable VHD.

That's  the thing, it works in the source because I've manually installed net framework 4.

But not in the portable VHD.

Net 4 is part of W8, so it should not be necessary to install net 4 in w8 source.

It is needed that you install in the source and run the apps that require .NET 4 so that registry is OK for those apps.

Then shut down and remake portable w8 vhd.

It might be that not all apps that require .NET 4 are working, but in any case several apps that I tried are working e.g. EasyBCD

If it does not work than you can try the Full Copy version or direct Install Win8 Pro in 15 GB VHD by using WinNTSetup

http://www.msfn.org/...811-385-beta-4/

Is it really needed for you to reduce size by making Portable or Mini 8 VHD ?

Sure, I could do that but the idea is to run everything portable, so nothing will be installed in the os.

What is the difference between full version on w8_compact and a full install by WinNTSetup?

Is there any plan or update for Windows 10?

At the moment there is no plan to make VHD_W10_Compact to make Mini 10,

but I think Portable and Mini 8 are very Universal and will remain a good solution for this purpose.

Im curious about the same.

The Full Copy version made by VHD_W8_Compact.exe contains the registry and all files and folders of the installed Win 8.1 source, so that it behaves like Win 8.1.

Excluded are symbolic links in Users and in ProgramData  like to \Documents and Settings,  which would give unwanted copy effects.

This is required to make the Full Copy VHD portable, so that it can be used on any computer.

Or make a compact install xpress8k on (10 GB expandable) VHD using WinNTSetup and applying trick to dissable hibernate and page file you end up with a VHD of 5.59 GB (only Windows 10x64 Pro, no more programs), I have done it this way, that's why I suggest xpress8k, more compression takes longer time to install and you don't get many MB's less.

Is there any way to integrate AccessGainDrivers.script from http://reboot.pro/to...rship-of-files/into your project? I have created the Full Copy VHDs and I would like to implement that for backup purposes.

Only possibilities :unsure::

You posted on monday night? (with a full moon )

wimb is actually busy on other matters?

You asked something that makes little sense? (using a Winbuilder .script inside something that uses NOT the Winbuilder interpreter, moreover a script for a PE on a "full" system)

Exactly  - You cannot use the Winbuilder script, but you can try the manual install after booting with the installed Win8.1 source as described here.

URL: http://www.hobeanu.com/accessgain/

Follow this procedure:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** INSTALLATION AND USAGE INSTRUCTIONS ***

1. Choose your platform folder:

   - 32-bit: i386
   - 64-bit: amd64

   - this will copy accgain.sys to the \windows\system32\drivers folder
     and register the minifilter

3. Open a command prompt

4. Type: fltmc load AccessGainDriver

   - this will load the AccessGain MiniFilter driver into memory

5. Type: fltmc attach AccessGainDriver c:

   - this will attach the AccessGain MiniFilter driver to your C: drive.

6. Try using Explorer to browse C:\System Volume Information which is a folder
protected by the operating system using NTFS security permissions.

7. Enjoy! If AccessGain has helped you please consider making a donation for its
   development:

Reboot Win8.1 source and test AccessGain to be sure that it is working OK
Then Reboot and remake your Compact VHD as usual.

hi ,i am facing issues , running your tool for the first time.

here is what i did ,

1- installed Win 8.1 x86 on a 15gb vhd ,using winntsetup. booted it from usb , install complete , and it successfully reached desktop .

2- rebooted into main os . win10 64bit , move win8.vhd from usb to internal hdd.

3- , selected win8.vhd  , boot drive and system drive both selected as my USB.  like in first pic.

4- , now i press on GO , and it asked me to select my user profile , i selected it .

5- then it gave me error ( in 2nd pic )

6- and finally this error in last pic.

i think it failed to select that txt file , to exclude useless files.

Regards

Maanu

*** Update VHD_W8C - Version 88 ***

- Solution for missing file Boot\bootvhd.dll in case Boot Manager BCD menu was made earlier by MediaCreationTool

File Boot\bootvhd.dll is essential to make the VHD entry appear in BIOS Boot Manager menu.

Download : VHD_W8C_88  - Encrypted with password =  bootwimb
