Hello,

My tiny USB stick booted happily from SARDU until it got corrupted (filesystem RAW, 0 bytes capacity, etc). I FAT32 formatted it, and re-installed my distros, but now it won't boot. I plug it in, and all the computer says is "Boot error." This happens on every Windows XP machine (different BIOSes) I have tried it on. In fact, my friend experienced the same problem: the USB just isn't bootable (at least on Windows XP) after a format. I tried searching, but no dice. Does anyone know why this happens, or how I can fix it? A deeper format? A different format?

TIA

Hello

A easy way to format you stick is RmPrepUSB: Take a look to the homepage. It is very good for information around different (windows) systems.

http://www.rmprepusb.com/

When you use SARDU you have to format the stick in "fat32".

first of all verify if your partition is active.
after this you can use BOOTICE to manage the MBRPBR of the usb drive or RmPrepUSB.

type "cmd" in the search window and press enter.
Now open a console window, then type "discpart" (in Germany "diskpart").
now type the following commands.

"list disk" <- to view all drives.

"select disk <USB-Stick number>" <- to select the USB flash drive.

"clean" <- to delete everything thereon.

"create partition primary" <- self explanatory.

"select partition = 1" <- partition you have to created.

"active" <- to enable partition 1

to format the partition in the FAT32 format type "format fs = fat32"

"assign" <- To make the partition in Windows Explorer visibility.

Closes the "upper" console "C: WINDOWS system32 diskpart.exe".

hope this will help you.

Wow, thanks! Now my USB Drive boots again! :D I wonder what was the problem? How do diskpart and Disk Management's formatting abilities differ? In any case, it works, and I hope it will for my friend too. Thank you again!

Topic is solved.
