Single setup for Windows 7 & 8.1

Best Answer Agent47 , 29 February 2016 - 02:54 PM

Hi

It's possible to combine both "Windows 8.1" and "Windows 7" in to a single WIM file and use "Windows 8.1" setup to install either of the OS. Make sure that you should remove any existing "ei.cfg" file from the "Sources" folder and create a new one with the following content.

Without this "ei.cfg", "Windows 8.1" setup may throw errors.

Hi, I copied the whole Windows 8.1 DVD into the hard and install.wim of Windows 7, then combined the install.wim of both Windows and made an ISO.

I started installation, after setup is starting screen it gave up an error about "invalid key".

Anyone know how to solve this? or any unattend.xml which can handle the Windows to skip the key and go forward.

Simply I want to made an single installer for Windows 8.1 and 7,

Actually you didn't specifically say you wanted a single WIM file, you said that is what you tried.  Since there are many ways to skin a cat (so to speak), the outcome is what matters most, and not how you get there.

But hey - if the above 'trick' works to jam them into a single wim file - great.  easy2boot is a lot more flexible and more easily updated, but YMMV...
