If I may, I would like to remark the:

Recommended for advanced users only!

Or. if you prefer, to these:

Features:

  • View full technical information on drives.
  • Manipulate SMART tests and view SMART status.
  • Extensive testing and benchmarking with graphical maps.
  • Low level sector viewing and manipulation.
  • Much more...

you can add this feature ;):
  • Easily "botch" a hard disk in such a way that DATA on it will be absolutely UNrecoverable
Be very, very, VERY careful when experimenting with this kind of tools. :)

Or, DO NOT come here whining about your hard disk having been wiped/whatever. :whistling:

Actually, Victoria author recommends using Victoria for DOS due to differences how HDs are addressed in DOS and Windows. In particular, full write access to HDs in Windows is not always available, direct access to disk might not be possible, and tests speed is limited. Also, the drives need to be accessed with BIOS settings switched to IDE emulation.

very very nice.

I can't get it to work on one perticular machine. Think I've got some serious hardware issues.

The security options only become visible in PIO mode. This is where there's an issue with the passport on the drives I've tested.

Drive comes up good in API Mode though. But unfortunately I don't think you can use the secuirty functions.

Oh well.

This is expected. in PIO mode Victoria uses the porttalk driver to talk directly to the hardware and bypass the restrictive windows API. You may have to play a bit with the PCI port/channel settings to find your drive.

Update: Not sure what I did, but it's now detected. The estimated time for a erasure is 68minutes, but it reckons it did it in a split second.

Just confirmed that it didn't touch the drive at all.

I've seen that as well on a few drives I have tried. Seems like it set the password for the drive lock but never started the erasure process. I ended up using hdparam to finish the wipe.
