I am running a fairly new system (Dell Precision t1500 i7 870) and my fans are running at full constantly. My cpu is idling 99% of the time, according to fdapm, and I have tried many different programs. Would it be safe to unplug my fans, or is there another option?

First thing check the actual CPU temperature (this should be possible from BIOS or - depending on the OS running - there are suitable tools), it is not uncommon that the heatsink is misplaced or - for whatever reason - has not a good contact with the CPU.

I am running the latest version of freedos. I think it is an incompatibility with my motherboard/fans that is causing the high fan speeds. I am not entirely sure how to check system temp on freedos.

It is quite common when running DOS for the CPU fan and perhaps other fans to run fast because the CPU is rarely idling in a 'halt' state when using the BIOS.

If you boot to a proper OS (e.g. linux from USB or WinPE from USB) the fans should be quieter.

You should never disconnect the CPU fan, it could damage the CPU.

As Wonko said, go into the BIOS setup menu and look at the Fan speeds and CPU temperature (if possible).

FreeDos has no direct control connection to System/CPU fans that I know of, the control of the fan speed is normally in BIOS..

Check this, however:

https://www.howtogee...uiet-operation/

But are you actually runing FreeDOS or running FreeDOS in a VM?

http://wiki.freedos....rtualBox_-_Heat

There is DOSIDLE (for DOS, but should work in FreeDOS as well):

http://maribu.home.x...or/dosidle.html

or loading FDAPM at start, see:

https://sourceforge....ssage/28199776/

but AFAIK/AFAICT both are about reducing CPU usage, hence temperature, hence fans (commanded by BIOS) will run less/slower.
